why do conservatives consider Texas’s record amount on death row inmates as a win?
they beat every state at the record amount of murderers. that’s a pathetic lose you people are proud of. whichever state has the record amount of abortions certainly isn’t getting any cheers from the left. that’s a tragedy. that’s why we want to provide social programs. so people wont have to resort to murder and thief just to make it to the end of their life.

My opinion has nothing to do with conservative v. liberal arguments. It is based on the death penalty system in action:

For the worst crimes, life without parole is better, for many reasons. I’m against the death penalty not because of sympathy for criminals but because it isn’t effective in reducing crime, prolongs the anguish of families of murder victims, costs a whole lot more than life in prison, and, worst of all, risks executions of innocent people.

The worst thing about it. Errors:
The system can make tragic mistakes. In 2004, the state of Texas executed Cameron Todd Willingham for starting the fire that killed his children. The Texas Forensic Science Commission found that the arson testimony that led to his conviction was based on flawed science. As of today, 138 wrongly convicted people on death row have been exonerated. DNA is rarely available in homicides, often irrelevant (as in Willingham’s case) and can’t guarantee we won’t execute innocent people. Capital juries are dominated by people who favor the death penalty and are more likely to vote to convict.

Keeping killers off the streets for good:
Life without parole, on the books in most states, also prevents reoffending. It means what it says, and spending the rest of your life locked up, knowing you’ll never be free, is no picnic. Two big advantages:
-an innocent person serving life can be released from prison
-life without parole costs less than the death penalty

Costs, a surprise to many people:
Study after study has found that the death penalty is much more expensive than life in prison. Since the stakes are so high, the process is far more complex than for any other kind of criminal case. The largest costs come at the pre-trial and trial stages. These apply whether or not the defendant is convicted, let alone sentenced to death.

Crime reduction (deterrence):
The death penalty doesn’t keep us safer. Homicide rates for states that use the death penalty are consistently higher than for those that don’t. The most recent FBI data confirms this. For people without a conscience, fear of being caught is the best deterrent.

Who gets it:
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn’t apply to people with money. Practically everyone sentenced to death had to rely on an overworked public defender. How many people with money have been executed??

Victims:
People assume that families of murder victims want the death penalty imposed. It isn’t necessarily so. Some are against it on moral grounds. But even families who have supported the death penalty in principle have testified to the protracted and unavoidable damage that the death penalty process does to families like theirs and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.

It comes down to whether we should keep the death penalty for retribution or revenge in spite of its flaws and in spite of the huge toll it exacts on society.

Fourth, get the other driver’s information including their names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, make and model of their vehicles, license plate numbers, and their insurance company name and policy number. If there are witnesses, get their names, addresses and telephone numbers as well. If the other driver makes any admissions of fault, write those down as well.

 

Fifth, if you have a camera on your cell phone or in the car and you aren’t too injured, take some photos of the vehicles and the scene. If you can’t do it right away, do it after you are released from the hospital.

Sixth, if you are hurt, obtain medical treatment. Don’t decline the ambulance or hospital examination to save your insurance company money or to be stoic. Take your valuables out of your car if you can and get checked out at the hospital. If you are not hurt, don’t get treatment you don’t need. However, remember, after an accident, you may feel a rush of adrenaline that causes you to only start feeling symptoms of pain a few hours later. If you have a health plan that requires you to obtain permission first, call them and find out where you are allowed to seek treatment.

She was one of those big-voiced R&B women of the mid to late 50s, with a style close to that of LaVern Baker, Big Maybelle and Big Mama Thornton. Her real name has been a mystery. for years, but early in 2008 someone in Berlin discovered that it was Otha Lee Moore Hall (she was married to Samuel Hall) .Before her recording career, Tiny sang with Al Smith’s 8-piece jazz/R&B club band, which was formed in Chicago in 1945. This group broke up in 1952 without having been recorded. Al Smith’s band went on to become the house band for labels like Chance, Parrot and Vee-Jay and turned out 81 sessions between 1952 and 1959, but without Tiny’s involvement.
iny’s first recording session was held in Cincinnati on July 9, 1957 and resulted in the bouncy “Aw! Shucks Baby” (Federal 12302), with a great tenor solo by Ray Felder. The label credit reads “Tiny Topsy With The Five Chances”. The flip was a cover of “Miss You So”, a Top 10 R&B hit for Lillian Offitt (Excello 2104, also # 66 pop). A third track from this session, “A Woman’s Intuition”, remained unissued until 1988. Her next two singles – both solid rockers – “Come On, Come On, Come On” (Federal 12309) and “You Shocked Me” (Federal 12315) both saw a UK release on the Parlophone label, quite surprising, considering the rarity of US R&B releases in Blighty at that time. (When Elmore James died in 1963, none of his records had been issued in the UK during his lifetime.)
Tiny Topsy’s fourth Federal single is a very interesting one. Written by the aforementioned Bernice Williams, it is called “Western Rock ‘n’ Roll” and incorporates snippets of then-current hits (Lollipop, At the Hop, Get a Job, Short Shorts). It opens with gunshots and probably for that reason, Dave Penny (yes, the same one) calls it a “Western Movies pastiche” in his 1988 liner notes for the LP “Aw! Shucks Baby”. However, the recording date of “Western Rock ‘n’ Roll” (March 19, 1958) predates the release date of the Olympics hit by some three months. So it looks like the sound effects on “Western Movies” were inspired by “Western Rock ‘n’ Roll” instead of the other way round.
Tiny Topsy certainly was a trendsetter, because her next single (and her last one for Federal) was the original of what has become a classic : “Just A Little Bit”. Rosco Gordon had a # 2 R&B hit with his version in 1960 and the song has been covered by countless people, including Jerry Lee Lewis on his “Southern Roots” album.
After leaving Federal, Tiny had only one further single released, “Working On Me Baby”, coupled with “How You Changed” (Argo 5383). In the UK, “How You Changed” was retitled “After Marriage Blues” (Pye International N 25104).
An alternate take of “Aw! Shucks Baby” was released by King in 1963, not long before her untimely death at the age of only 34. She never scored a hit, but her small legacy is thoroughly enjoyable.

Ok, I have been following this case lately and basically this man was arrested in 1993 and brought up on three homicide charges in the deaths of his then-live-in girlfriend and her two adult-age sons. From day one, Skinner has shouted from the roof-tops that he is innocent, but he was convicted and received The Death Penalty. Originally, his death sentence was scheduled to be carried out on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 (so in just a couple of days from this posting.) However, there was a petition circulated on Change.org, and some former attorneys, judges, and politicians from Texas wrote letters to the present-day Governor of Texas asking they (at least temporarily) forego this execution while the fight to save this potentially innocent man’s life continues. Apparently, the prosecutor from the DA’s Office assigned to this case did NOT request DNA testing on every piece of evidence (s)he could have, which included a victim’s RAPE KIT for God’s Sake! Now, I won’t pretend to be a legal expert, or a cop or anything, but I’ve seen far too many episodes of Law & Order: SVU to know that’s one of the FIRST THINGS you take to the crime lab for DNA testing so you make sure you’re busting the right "perp." Now, for the last TEN YEARS OR MORE, Skinner and his attorney have been submitting official requests to the DA’s Office asking that they go through the evidence and whatever wasn’t DNA tested before or during the trial, be DNA tested now because it very well could prove Skinner’s oft-repeated claim of innocence is true. The DA’s Office keeps denying the requests, saying something to the effect that if they wanted EVERYTHING that could have been DNA tested to be DNA tested, they should have asked that it all be DNA tested either before the case went to trial, or at the latest during the trial, but after the trial is over and the defendant is sentenced is too late. Now, again, I’m no lawyer or judge, or legal expert – far from it, actually, but this SCREAMS of Prosecutorial Misconduct to me. To me, this is the equivalent of denial of a fair trial AND denial of Due Process of Law. IMO, they need to hold off on the execution until EVERYTHING is DNA tested, and while waiting, Skinner should be in Gen Pop, or even P.C. not Death Row. If he’s wrong about the DNA vindicating him, or knowingly, flat-out lied about it and he really was the murderer of these three, then don’t delay the execution any further – proceed IMMEDIATELY as soon as the DNA results are in, IMO. However, if he’s right and the DNA shows it wasn’t him, he’s been in prison far too long for an innocent man, so he would deserve to be released right then and there as soon as the DNA cleared him. So, am I right though? Does this sound like a case of Prosecutorial Misconduct? Does a DA/Prosecutor have the right to decide which evidence does or does NOT get DNA tested or which evidence they have that will/won’t be presented during a trial? Does a DA/Prosecutor have the right to tell a potentially innocent Prison Inmate asking for evidence DNA tests, "Sorry man you should have asked for these DNA tests before the trial."? I just want to smack the crap out of this Prosecuting Attorney – it sounds a lot like he cares more about his win/loss record than whether or not he’s got the correct "bad guy" in prison.
Susan S: Thanks. I agree. Someone needs to step in and b**ch smack the Prosecuting Attorney and Judge for letting this farce go on. There is NO harm in running the DNA tests even after the trial. If it proves him innocent, he goes home, if it proves him guilty, he’s dead in 3 days as planned. Just test the damn DNA! I would think it would be worth it to make sure they don’t bump off an innocent man. These people standing in the way of justice need to be dis-barred and jailed for being so stubborn and refusing to process all of the evidence!
@dudleysharp: you raise a few valid points and a compelling argument. I wonder though, if you’re right, why they wait now until about a week before his scheduled execution to go public on Change.org (supposedly falsely) claiming all of this and saying they’ve been practically BEGGING for this other evidence to be tested when apparently they asked for it NOT to be tested before the trial started? And why is it that the information I’m reading on this is saying that when the family asked for the rest of it to be tested after the trial the prosecution said no, making the prosecutor look bad, rather than saying the defendant asked for it not to be tested, making the defendant look more and more suspicious and more and more guilty? Something’s not adding up here. I wish I knew the truth – a potentially innocent man’s life is at stake.

Apparently the same local court where he was originally tried has turned down the latest request to test DNA. If he is executed this week (as scheduled) we will never know if Texas got the right person. I believe this is indefensible- and that even death penalty supporters would want to know for sure.

Hi, I have many details about my grandfather but I can’t find him in any sort of records at all. His name was Charles Michael "Skippy" Hopper Jr. He was born on April 26, 1951 Bronx, NYC and he died on June 20, 1980 in New York. He was in the U.S. Army after Vietnam and trained at Fort Dix. He was stationed in Germany in the mid 1970s’. His younger siblings were Robert Hopper and Marion Hopper (Dovico). I have records on both of his parents, Charles Hopper 1925-1987 and Marion Cerone (Serone or Ceroni) 1928- He married my grandmother Linda Fuchs on July 4, 1970. My mom (their only child) was later adopted and she never knew her dad. He was also an award winning runner. He committed suicide on June 20th 1980. I can’t find any thing on him. Can someone please help?

The SSDI can be incomplete. In general people are always in it if they received a SS benefit. Since your grandfather was young he may not have every received a benefit and his death cert may not have been forwarded and attached properly. If his wife didn’t claim a death benefit I wouldn’t automatically expect him to be in it. If no benefit was ever collected they may or may not be in it. Also, it’s an index compiled by private companies based on information they receive from the SS office and not compiled by the SS office, so there’s room for human error in transcribing the data.

If you know where he died, ordering his death certificate from the jurisdiction is your surest way to get the information you want. It will be in both a state and county agency, usually with vital statistics, health, or registrar in the name. The cert will cost around $12-25.
