A Tribute To Kansas Forward Thomas Robinson

June 1st, 2011 7 comments

KU sophomore forward Thomas Robinson, affectionately known as “T-Rob”, has lost his mother, Lisa, to a heart attack. With the the deaths of his grandparents before that, Robinson’s only remaining relative is his 9-year-old sister, Jayla. The entire Jayhawk Nation shares Thomas and Jayla’s grief, and at the same time rejoices that the KU athletics department and the NCAA are doing everything they can to support T-Rob. This video is my way of showing Thomas Robinson how much we in Kansas care about him. We look forward to the day when we can see him playing again in Allen Fieldhouse!

The song in this video is the Neil Sedaka song “Rosemary Blue”, recorded in 1971.

Do you agree/disagree Jehovahs Witness woman sues state of Kansas?

May 10th, 2011 15 comments

medical welfare to pay for bloodless care for liver transplant? This is a justification of the JW I disagree with completely. Suing is wrong unless you have been wronged terribly. This woman is asking welfare to go above and beyond for her alone. Any JW will tell you they try to be good neighbors. This is putting a money burden on tax payers and that is just with the lawsuit alone and not even if it does get paid for. I wonder how many people could get medical care with what she is getting from welfare medical benefits. This is a prime example of a JW bending the rules for themselves. She can move to another state or even Canada rather than cost Kansas the money she has. She probably gets more Kansas welfare than what other states would offer. or else she does not want to be inconvienced by moving.

TOPEKA | A Kansas appeals court poked and prodded Wednesday, but kept returning to the same question.

What compelling reason did Kansas have for refusing to pay for a woman’s request — based on her religious faith — to undergo a bloodless liver transplant that could be done only outside the state?

The answer could decide whether 64-year-old Mary Stinemetz, a Jehovah’s Witness from Hill City, Kan., can replace her failing liver that has left her near death after 20 years of illness.

“Don’t you have some type of compelling state interest to deny this, and what is that compelling interest?” Judge Stephen D. Hill asked the state’s lawyer, Brian Vazquez.

Hill’s comments came during a nearly hourlong session of the Kansas Court of Appeals, which generally allots about 30 minutes to hearings.

Stinemetz contends the state is violating her religious freedom under the U.S. Constitution and the Kansas Bill of Rights, which guarantee the right to worship “according to the dictates of conscience.”

The state is willing to allow Stinemetz to get a liver transplant, paid for by Medicaid, at the University of Kansas Hospital. But she would have to compromise her Jehovah’s Witness principles, because she would receive a blood transfusion, which she believes violates God’s law.

Stinemetz could undergo bloodless transplant surgery in Omaha, Neb., but Kansas is refusing to pay for the out-of-state procedure when a transplant is readily available at KU.

Stinemetz’s case rests partly on U.S. Supreme Court precedent from 1963, which holds the government needs a compelling state interest to justify infringing on someone’s right to freely exercise religion.

Vazquez acknowledged there was little, if anything, in the court record to show a compelling state interest. However, he contended that a 1990 Supreme Court decision from Oregon eliminated the need to show a compelling interest.

In that case, the court ruled that government could adopt laws that might burden someone’s religion as long as the law was neutral and didn’t target a specific religious faith.

The court is expected to issue a ruling later

@Paint a Picture-Welfare is in fact probably better than my private insurance which I pay a lot of money for and then pay more for taxes so she can get an operation that will save her life. There are so many people in between who will die b/c they have neither option and this woman is costing Kansas more by filing lawsuits for a bogus scripture interpretation. I am always curious why the JW’s do not comment when its a story about one of their own abusing the tax system. Why isn’t her brothers and sisters from Kingdom Hall assisting her with money? Because people like us will continue to pay taxes and do the christian thing of helping those less fortunate.

Medical Welfare and do the clean hard working diligent members of the Watch Tower Groups called Kingdom Halls have any sort of benefits or donations or drives to help one of their own?

I think not.

The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society only lines it’s own coffers and throws needy members on to the public system they refuse to show any social obligation toward.

The Watch Tower calls all governments under the influence of Satan and the Demons and yet the members sure do enjoy the benefits of being an American Citizen

The Watch Tower Demonizes all government whether this is the US government or not and the members can not salute the flag show support to any cause but the cause of The Watch Tower which is to buy and pass out literature and recruit new members who will also support the mega-corporation of the realty and publishing group called the Watch Tower.
Though
members can take all the money and benefits that are offered.
_______

(A Watch Tower twist Jehovah’s Witnesses do not know)
(The Watch Tower recently booted out long time workers that earn 14 dollars a month stipend or the equivalent and paid no taxes – some who never held a job and do not qualify for any government benefits. 55 – 60 – 65 years old – no working history – 0 taxes paid in their life and out on their backsides.)
_______

The Watch Tower again teaches their followers they may have no social obligation to the body whole of the people of the United States such as military or alternative service.but will sue at the drop of a dime to get benefits from the same government.

At what point do responsible citizens say enough to the Watch Tower and its drones?

I doubt Jehovah’s Witnesses taxes in a three state area are enough to pay for one operation like this – Jehovah’s Witnesses are the lowest educated and have lowest income of all major religions.

And yes 7 million members and associates of the Watch Tower make the Watch Tower one of the major religions yet it exerts to the degree it may absolute control over it followers.

Lyrics:

I am one of the last few standing, a survivor on a farm, just along the outskirts of a small city.
Like most that have made it this far, I live off of old canned goods and a healthy back stock of ammunition.

Greetings from extermination, Kansas – death in the midwest.
Greetings from extermination, Kansas – death in the midwest.

Even with the godless reaching my property every few days, I am tortured by solitude.
The whispering of the cornfields haunt me like the moans of my undead enemies.
My depression grows stronger: its bitter claws around my neck.
I will always be tortured… tortured by solitude.

Will anything get better for me? I have watched the world die, all I know now is regret.
Will this sickness ever leave this world? I have watched the world die, all I know now is regret.
I am haunted, I am haunted by all that surrounds me.
I have watched the world die, all I know now is regret.
What I’ve known has been taken from me. I have watched the world die, all I know now is regret.

I am one of the last few standing, a survivor on a farm, just along the outskirts of a small city.
No one living has been within this house since my wife died two years ago.
Another occasion of when the undead came across some innocence…
…came across some innocence.

I will never see through this nightmare. I will never know sunlight again.
I will never see through this nightmare. I will never taste her lips again.

Genealogy how to help?

April 8th, 2011 3 comments

How do I find my Great Great Grandparents Parents? I have found all the below information on my Jones line but have had no luck finding James P Jones’s Parents. I have no Reference as to his parents names or birth dates. I know they where born in Wales and thats about it. What are the steps I should Be taking to find the next generation back. Using the online sites both pay and free I have not been able to find a marriage certificate or death certificate for James. The 1850 Census has a couple of possibility’s but nothing promising. I have talked to all the living relatives that I know and no one knows anything. I have also posted messages on a few genealogy sites hoping to find relatives of this line that may have information. Below is the information I have found on James and his Family. Any help would be appreciated and if you know this family I would realy love to hear from you!!

James P. Jones and his Family.
He was married to a Maria and i am fairly sure her last name was Griffith, Griffen, Griffeths or something close to that spelling. James and Maria are both from Wales.
They have children born in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. According to the 1900 Census James Jones came to the US in 1849 from Wales (he would have been 15 so probably came with his parents but not for sure on that). Here is what I have so far.

1860 US Census
Cleveland ward 6, Cuyahoga, Ohio

James Jones 26 Wales (Great Great Grandfather)
Maria Jones 24 Wales
William Jones 2 Ohio (Great Grandfather)
Sara Jones 7/12 Ohio

1870 US Census
Munising, Schoolcraft, Michigan

James 35 Wales Listed as a Moulder
Maria 33 Wales
William 12 Ohio
Sara 11 Ohio
Edward 9 Ohio
Henry Michigan
Margaret 8 Michigan
Ellen 5 Michigan
Rachel 3 Michigan
Hannah 2 Michigan

1880 US Census
Northampton, Rooks, Kansas

James P 42 Wales
Maria 40 Wales
William P 21 Ohio
Maggie 16 Ohio
Henry 13 Michigan
Nellie 12 Michigan
Hannah 10 Michigan
Lizzie 9 Pennsylvania
Martha 4 Pennsylvania

1885 Kansas State Census
Northampton, Rooks, Kans
as

James 56 Wales
Maria 54 Wales
Edward 21 Ohio
Nellie 18 Michigan
Hannah 15 Michigan
Elizabeth 12 Pennsylvania
Mattie 9 Pennsylvania
James 1 Birth place blank

1900 US Census
Northampton, Rooks, Kansas

James P. 70 Widowed Wales
William P. 39 Ohio
Geanal-Jeanas 15 (listed as James’s Grandson spelling is probably wrong very hard to read on census record)

Rooks County Kansas Marriages That could be our Jones Family

Edward Jones to Dora Hayworth Oct 29, 1896
Maggie Jones to W.W. Wiley Dec 14, 1884
Hannah Jones to D.T. Ashton Oct 29, 1886
Sara Jones to Hugh M Wilson Jan 30, 1887
Sara J Jones to Gurley W. Sargur Oct 23, 1879
Elizabeth Jones to J.A. Hampt Oct 7, 1896
Mattie Jones to T.A. Myers Mar 26, 1893

Notes: Our Sara was out of the house for the 1880 Census so The Sarah J is probably her and she was either widowed/divorced by 1887 or the other Sara is not the same person.

Rooks county Kansas Births that may be related to our Joneses

William Jones and Nellie Unknown = Baby Jones July 17, 1891
Edward Jones and Jennie Pickenpaugh = Baby Jones Jul 1, 1899
Edward Jones and Dora Hanosth = William Jones July, 13 1897
Maggie Jones and Whright Wiley = Baby Wiley Sep 24, 1890

I have a Sarah Griffiths in my genealogy, from Wales, late 1700s. I have never found anything about her parents, or her husbands parents (only 5 generations ago for me). There are Jones in my tree also, but from England or unknown origin.

I know they always say find the census, birth/marriage/death certificates, but these things don’t always exist today in the U.S. of A. Life was so cheap back then that often there were no records.

Your best chance of finding any info is throught the "User Submitted Trees". If that works, then you can always look to see if they show up in the Census or official records. Another option is to check newspaper archives. Still another is to check genealogical/historical societies and library archives (the Library of Congress, state/university libraries such as in Ohio, New York, Virginia, and Alabama).

I always take the easy route: if I cannot find one ancestor, I look for another.

How do you sort your genealogy files?

March 14th, 2011 3 comments

I’m hoping for some advice here. Normally, I would go to my mother for all things genealogical, but she’s more “old school” in that she’s used to dealing with hard copies that she has ordered and received. The majority of her research (the last 30+ years) was before the advent of ancestry.com, GenWeb, and online depositories put together by the individual states.

For most of my family lines, I’m the same way. My family is from Kansas/Oklahoma and North Carolina (so far). My ex-husbands paternal line is from Pennsylvania. All of which require you to write and order vital records directly from their local/state offices. Then it’s just a matter of scanning the received records onto my computer and inputting the information into my genealogy program.

However, my ex-husbands maternal line isn’t nearly as easy or clean-cut. They are primarily from Virginia/West Virginia which has started putting all their vital records online. So it’s easy to run a search of who I’m looking for and get immediate access to copies of their records. Then it’s off to ancestry.com or other sites to look up census records, burial records, tombstones, etc.

The trouble I’m facing now is that I just don’t know how to file the items on my computer. It started off easy enough. I had the main surname file for my mother-in-law’s maiden name. Within that file I had separate folders for her direct ancestors (Gma, Gpa, GGma, GGpa, etc.) with secondary files by their siblings.

For example:

I would have a folder for “Joe Blow” (Gpa) which I would save all his pertinent documents (birth, death, marriage, census records, etc.). Next to that folder would be one titled “Joe Blow Siblings”. Within that folder would be additional folders for each of his brothers and sisters.

Then, because I was getting into extended family, I would have subfolders for their spouse, their children, their spouses parents, etc. If I was doing any of the other lines, I wouldn’t be going that far right now, but because the files are online for the taking, I figured “why not”? Plus, I’m a little anal when it comes to blank spots, so I think a bit of OCD has kicked in.

Anyway, this is where the problem has arisen.

The family is primarily from the Cabell/Wayne County areas of W.VA and what I started to see what cousins marrying cousins (some 1st cousins, but a lot of 3rd cousins, 4th cousins, etc.). People have started to pop up in two or three (or more) areas of the family. In one spot they might be a spouse, then later as a brother, and then again as a 2nd spouse or something.

Obviously, the way I was doing it isn’t working anymore. I was going to start ending up with multiple folders for the same person and a billion shortcuts which would just cause even more confusion.

I’m sure others have run across this problem in small communities in which their families are long standing residents. Is there a better way to save the information to the computer? Has anyone figured out a good way to file their info in a way that makes sense, is easy to access, and limits the possibilities of duplicate individuals?

I’ve currently done away with the former system and just have all the saved files in the folder for my mother-in-law. But now I have over 700 files sitting there and several people with the exact same names (ex: Benjamin Franklin Doe, Andrew Jackson Blow).

Thanks so much for the advice!
Thanks Tom, I totally agree. And on a side note: I "enjoy" how someone gave you a thumbs down for your advice, yet didn’t offer any of their own.
Marci — Thanks for the tip! I had no idea this resource existed. I’m going to definitely check it out! Thanks again!

WOW! You are way more organized than I am. I file under my and DH’s 4 grandparent surnames with file-names that indicate the name or family the document concerns. Fortunately I have not had any crossovers. If I find a particularly interesting family, I might have a sub-folder for them. I feel so disorganized.

Lisa Louise Cook on Genealogy Gems has covered this topic several times on her podcasts, You might want to listen to some of the suggestions she and her guests have had.

Michael Jackson WBSS Victory Tour Live In Kansas 1984 High Definition

Michael Jackson WBSS Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ Victory Tour Live In Kansas 1984 High Definition

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanna_Be_Startin%27_Somethin%27

“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” is a song by American songwriter and recording artist Michael Jackson. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” was released on May 8, 1983, by Epic Records as the fourth single from Jackson’s sixth studio album Thriller in 1982. The song was written by Jackson and produced by Jackson and Quincy Jones. The song’s lyrics pertain to strangers spreading rumors to begin or start an argument just for no reason. Musically, “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” has a cross-cultural disco theme, similar to Jackson’s material from his previous album Off the Wall in 1979. The song’s rhythm arrangement consists of interweaving drum-machine patterns, while the horn arrangement is brassy and precise. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” has been covered and sampled by multiple recording artists since its release. Aside from Thriller, “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” appears on multiple compilation and greatest hits albums by Jackson.

“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” was generally well received by contemporary music critics. The song was also commercially successful, charting within the top twenty and top thirty in multiple countries. The song became Jackson’s fifth consecutive top ten single in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking within the top ten at number five. The song re-entered charts in 2008 after the release of Thriller 25. Following Jackson’s death in June 2009, the song re-entered music charts worldwide, mainly due to digital download sales. Unlike previous singles from Thriller, “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” did not have a music video to accompany it, but was performed by Jackson on world concert tours, as both a member of The Jacksons and as a solo artist.

As part of the release of Thriller 25, a remix of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'”, entitled “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ 2008”, was recorded with Akon, and released as the second single from the album. The song was commercially successful, mainly charting within the top ten in six countries, as well as the top twenty in several territories worldwide. The song was more successful internationally than in the United States, having peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at number eighty-one, which was the song’s lowest charting position.
