For the best free site on death records go to www.rootsweb.ancestrycom and click on the Social Security Death Index. Another source I sometimes use is google. Just type in the individuals name and death and if there’s an online obituary available it could come up.

One of the best places for searching is Cyndi’s list–she is a genealogist and has a number of links to genealogy sites. I think its cyndislist.com or google "Cyndi’s list". Most vital records are kept by the county the person died. Otherwise you may get the same records at the state vital statistics office usually in the county court house.

You can look at the social security death index. You can search by the persons name to get the date of death if they had a social security number. If you want the death certificate you can’t get that for free. If it’s recent and the family had an obituary published in the newspaper it may be available online in the newspaper archives.

Depends on the time. Our library has all of them on microfilm up to 1955 & obits up to the present. Some states charge for death records. But you can get them at the state Bureau of Vital Statistics which is usually located in the capitol. You can also go to http://www.familysearch.com if they had a social security number, put in their name & get the particulars for free. Cyndi’s list mentioned above is also a good place & rootsweb. But most of the recent certified death records you have to pay for. Places like family search just give you the SS index record like SS # & places worked. I’m thinking it has to be 50 yrs. old for the certified ones to be a public record.
