How high will gas prices go before the people join together in protest??
My guess would be in a few years it will be over 8 bucks and then all he** will break loose. From the 1980’s all the way to 2003 it was only 25$ a barrel!! In early 2007 it was around 60$ dollars then rose to 92$ later that year! Now it has reached a record high at 117$ a barrel at 3.50$, as of today! Alaska’s oil is running low, Canada’s oil is running low, and militant groups are attacking crude oil pipelines. Bush talks about needing to get off of oil dependance, but nothing has been done, just crappy hybrids and the death of the electric car. Will there be something similar to the Vietnam Anti-War protest if this gets worse? It’s virtually impossible to satisfy a growing population dependant on oil. Will it be a Mad Max postapocolyptic future?

Yeah it’s sad, we will always be slaves to oil, as long as the government controls the oil, they control us.
I would like to just put the blame on Bush, because that would mean gas prices and the war would end when they left office, but that’s not gonna happen, there will be a new president, probably Mccain because presidents are usually x-military , and gas prices will still increase,the value of the dollar like Ron Paul said will decline, the war will still go on and Americas military will still "police the world".
Maybe it is time for us to protest the companies who continue to suppress the technologies that we could use to power things without the need for fossil fuels. The fuel cell, for example,which takes the "h"(hydrogen) out of h2o (Water), is used to help[ power the Space Shuttle. Why not vehicles? The Shuttle has been around for 20 odd years. So has this technology. Answer: Petrol/oil = money. Money buys patents for alternative power sources. Alternate power sources suppressed. Sad but true.

People can protest all they want, but it will never change the price, As far as running out of oil goes If we are so concerned about it then why the heck don’t people start living their lives in more economical and natural ways. Its just to easy to get into your cars, Why not walk, ride a bike or perhaps even buy a donkey and cart, No sorry that last solution isn’t really practical but I’m sure you get what I’m saying.

One of the reasons the price of gasoline (and most everything else) is going up is that the value of the US Dollar has dipped so low compared to other currencies. Our dollar is only worth a fraction of what it was worth 10 years ago. The primary reason is the continual funding at truly astounding rates of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When the military needs more money, Congress votes a supplemental appropriation as asked by our President, and (put simplistically) the Bureau of Engraving and Printing just prints off more and more bales of money. So every time you buy gasoline and pay a higher price for it, remember that it is the price we are paying for a free Iraq, and thank President Bush for starting the war.

If the reason for gas prices going so high is lack of supply, then why are the oil companies being investigated for record high profits? Should there not be a cap on the profits these companies are allowed to earn? Why is this being tolerated? I often wonder…how do the little people like ourselves get heard? How do we go about protesting? All I know is I can’t wait for Dick and Bush to be out of the White House.

A lot of oil prize increase is caused from a weakened dollar, dollar lost about 45% to international currencies the last 7 years.
I also think oil companies try to make as much profit as possible now, because we are waiting for a break-thru in alternative fuels, like electicity, hydrogen, bio fuel and ethanol, and that will "kill" a lot of the demand on oil, with lower prizes as a result and less profit for oil companies. I hope oil companies use the extra profit to develope alternative energy sources.
Solar panel’s will drop a lot in prizes when we start mass produce them like we have been doing last years with other silicon based tech, like computers and tv. Cheap solar panels open doors for free energy to heat houses and for utility etc. Sunlight is free, if we dont get taxed on it.
Diesel prices have increased more than gas prices, probobly because oilcompanies know that trucks and trains cant stop running. At the very end, we consumers will have to pay for the increasing costs for commercial transportation too.
It feels like it’s some kind global war going on, the rest of OPEC are putting pressure on US, a big part of OPEC are from the muslim arabic world. We need to get some more International friendships to do better in that war…… I think we need to get off oil dependence and especially internationally….Maybe we should start pumping more domestic oil, and that way lower the international demand and lower the prizing on oil. Just now it feels like a change in the WhiteHouse, can turn it around.
When will we start protest??? well the only way we can do it is to make sure we have the right kind of, and honest, politicians to vote for. To lower energy costs we need to get started now to put a huge economical effort into developing alternate energy sources. McCain, Clinton or Obama, thats the question. Wouldnt be surprized if Gore start talking white house again.

There are several misconceptions here. As Biblio said, what is now driving the price of oil and gasoline higher isn’t OPEC, it’s the weak dollar. Every time it decreases in value it takes more dollars to buy a barrel of oil. And there is no magic number that will finally change things, else we’d have started cutting back when it first hit $1 a gallon not all that long ago. China and other growing countries need the oil so the price will keep going up.
Blaming politicians is easy and usually justified as well, but what do you expect them to do in this case? Environmentalist prevent us from drilling in ANWR, they won’t let us build new nuclear power plants or dams for hydroelectric so we are totally dependent on foreign countries for energy. We could liquefy coal and use that but we’d have the same or worse emission problems that we have now. I’d split the blame equally between Big Oil, the politicians of both parties, and the environmental lobbies.
Every politician in my lifetime has talked about energy independence and guess what? Yes, we’re more dependent on foreign energy than ever. If there is a political solution it will only happen if we demand it, like funding a new alternative energy program like Pres Carter once did. OPEC destroyed that initiative by cutting oil prices again to make it an unpopular program, maybe they’d do the same again.
Fusion is getting cheaper all the time, maybe in a decade or so we’ll actually start to use that. In the meantime there is solar thermal energy, much cheaper than photovoltaic cells, a car that will supposedly run on compressed air (I’ll believe that when I see it), electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars. An electric car still needs a power plant to provide the juice but it can be a renewable source. A hybrid is not crappy and some models cost very little more than a conventional car, with far higher fuel efficiency.
In many ways we already live in a Mad Max era, the videos of kids beating each other down just to get on youtube proves we’re at least as barbaric and for much less reason than anything in that film. After all, they’re fighting to gain infamy, not food or to survive.
If you’re worried that oil companies are making record profits, you’d better investigate Microsoft too, they’re doing quite well. They don’t make as much profit per gallon as the US government charges in taxes and the government doesn’t do very much to get it’s share, does it? McCain is right about that if nothing else, ending the excise tax on gas would be a lot better stimulus than a check we’ll all use to buy goods imported from China – with money we’ll have to borrow from China in the first place by selling them T-bills. It’s stupid but no more than I expect from a politician.
If you really want to make an impact then do it at the polls – don’t elect anyone who won’t spend our money on actually solving this once and for all by developing cheap alternative energy sources like fusion, hydrogen and so on. At least demand that every cent in fuel excise taxes go into such a plan instead of some pork project.

I was just listening to steiglitz talking about this. At the start of the war oil was $23 a barrel!!! now it’s $113. No wonder Bush was so keen on middle east conflict.
America is borrowing ALL of the money to finance the war and he was estimating the cost at 3 trillion, conservatively.
Who knows when the american people will wake up. Their whole country is in the hock shop and they’re just getting deeper every day.
Imagine what would happen if the american people poured those resources into developing alternative energy sources instead of destroying other countries!

As in all commodities the price will go as high as the market will stand. Economy 101 .. as the price rises the demand will decrease. As the price rises competition for a new fuel source will find a new fuel source. As the new fuel source becomes economical the old fuel source will drop in price or become obsolete.

It is still WE THE PEOPLE right ? Gas will go as high as they want it 2 go , until we step in and do something. If enough people speak their minds get the wrong people out of office and the higher ups , things might change, remember we as a people vote , and these people that supposedly make choices and decisions for us , work for us. Get our soldiers out of that hell overseas, those people have been fighting for thousands of years, BUY AMERICAN whenever you can.
