Why do women face a 248% greater risk in suicide, accidental death and homicide after abortion?

"Springfield, IL (Nov. 29, 2005) — Compared to women who have not been pregnant in the prior year, deaths from suicide, accidents and homicide are 248% higher in the year following an abortion, according to a new 13-year study of the entire population of women in Finland.

The study also found that majority of the extra deaths among women who had abortions were due to suicide. The suicide rate among women who had abortions was six times higher than that of women who had given birth in the prior year and double that of women who had miscarriages.

The epidemiological study, published in the European Journal of Public Health, was conducted by Finland’s National Research and Development Center for Welfare and Health (STAKES). The researchers looked at data between 1987 and 2000 on all deaths among women of reproductive age (15 to 49).

While the risk of death from suicide, accidents, and homicide was highest among women who had abortions within the prior year, the risk of death was lowest among women who gave birth within the prior year, who had less than half the death rate of women who had not been pregnant. The risk of death following a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, however, did not significantly differ from the risk of death among non-pregnant women.

The new study confirms findings from previous record-based studies carried out in Finland and the United States that have found elevated risks of death among women who have abortions. A 1997 government-funded study in Finland found that aborting women were 3.5 times more likely to die within the next year compared to women who gave birth.

In addition, researchers examining death records linked to medical payments for birth and abortion for 173,000 California women found that aborting women were 62 percent more likely to die than delivering women over the eight year period examined. That study also found that the increase risk of death was most prominent from suicides and accidents, with a 154 percent higher risk of death from suicide and an 82 percent higher risk of death from accidental injuries."

A similar study…

"There is strong evidence that abortion dramatically increases the risk of suicide. According to a 1986 study by researchers at the University of Minnesota, a teenage girl is 10 times more likely to attempt suicide if she has had an abortion in the last six months than is a comparable teenage girl who has not had an abortion.(2) Other studies have found similar statistical significance between a history of abortion and suicide attempts among adults. Thus, the actual data suggests that abortion is far more likely to drive an unstable woman to suicide than is pregnancy and childbirth.

Meta Uchtman, director of the Cincinnati chapter of Suiciders Anonymous, reported that in a 35 month period her group worked with 4000 women, of whom 1800 or more had abortions. Of those who had abortions, 1400 were between the ages of 15 and 24, the age group with the fastest growing suicide rate in the country."

Until there is a study proving that every single one of those women who committed suicide after having an abortion did so explicitly BECAUSE of said abortion, this proves nothing. Did those suicides leave notes detailing that they could not live with what they had done? Chances are very few did.

Having an abortion is highly stigmatized. Perhaps these women killed themselves afterwards not because they felt guilt or whatever it is you’re trying to imply, but because so-called "pro-lifers" made their lives completely miserable.

Additionally: you are only looking at statistics in Finland, which are hardly representative of anywhere else in the world. Finland has a population of only 5.4 million people – less than the population of New York City – and has an extremely good health care system, which means post-natal care is superb.

In other words: you can find results that fit your hypothesis if you plan it that way.

I answered a troll question yesterday about "not having guilt" after an abortion. One of the leading causes of suicide is depression, and I can’t think of anything that would depress me more than having an abortion.

I had a miscarriage, and cried for months. It was so bad, that I even get depressed when the month that baby would have been born rolls around every year…March [coming up].

I feel sick when I kill an animal with my car O.o

Probably because women who have abortions are more likely to have other problems. i.e. it is more likely they have health issues anyway (particularly mental health issues), that they were raped, that they are in abusive relationships etc. I don’t see that this is evidence that women are killing themselves out of guilt at having an abortion.

But I haven’t read the study, and the Daily Heil is the last place I would look for an intelligent summary of the findings.

For some, an abortion is a severely disempowering thing (if I may just borrow that phrase for a moment), and many are depressed, listless, emotionally needy and confused, etc. This probably leads to suicide attempts, accidents from sheer lack of concentration and not relating to surroundings, and alienation from family support etc.

I was once engaged to a lady who had an abortion, not my child, during our relationship, and she totally withdrew, ending our relationship, and rather hastily married some other very ordinary guy quickly afterwards. As I said, it is a very confusing time for some, and guilt-ridden as well, and this probably accounts for a lot of the problems listed.

Not too sure about that murder figure, though, unless it’s simply the fact of predators picking up on the vulnerability of a person suffering, thus making that person easy prey.

    It’s all very sad, really.

Despite what a lot of people think, an abortion is a miserable and painful experience for many women. I don’t know anyone who’s had an abortion and went on like nothing happened. Usually a woman has spent a while thinking about if she should do it or not, her relationship with the father of the baby, how she will feel afterwards. For a deeply religious woman who thinks it’s wrong morally and against her beliefs, she’s in a tug of war emotionally. Some women may feel a sense of helplessness, guilt and loss. They may have wanted the baby and felt they had no choice in the matter. And for someone who already has problems with depression, it could push them over the edge.

I have read that depressed people are more accident prone. Why that is I’m really not sure. Are their thoughts elsewhere? Do they just not care enough about themselves to take normal precautions in their lives like mentally healthy people? Do they secretly wish themselves harm and are able to do it less guiltily with an "accident?"

I would think that women who have recently given birth would be least likely to die in the following year because they have a baby to care for and for many it’s a time of joy and happiness.

I don’t think they do. How would a death certificate be tied to a medical procedure that most women get without even telling their friends- let alone tie it to cause of death?

I think they looked for something that wasn’t there and found it even if they had to make up causes.

That makes sense, but this study wouldn’t describe women who abort babies as a hobby or who use abortions as BC. Here’s a link — http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1220095/American-abortion-addict-15-terminations-17-years-publishes-memoir.html

That’s because abortion isn’t just a minor thing. They know that it’s a baby, and they’ve killed it. The guilt and despair and regret is real for the majority of women who abort. Women are being lied to and mislead by the pro-choice crowd when it comes to the reality of life after an abortion. They’re told that it’s for the good of the baby and for their own benefit, that it will fix a bad situation, that they’ll feel better. It’s not true.

I wonder what NOW and other feminist organizations will have to say about this….it really goes against the grain of one of their most highly-held ideals.

@zeureeka – why don’t you stick your head in the sand a little further?

I know people who had abortions and it totally messes them up in the head. But OK, it’s not that, it’s pro-lifers getting all up in their face. Pro-lifers go to abortion clinics and trick the receptionist into giving names and addresses of the women and then they go to their house and dump on them. That’s the real reason why they get depressed.

Statistics 101: Correlation does not equal causation.

People who have abortions don’t do it because they are just thrilled with the situation they find themselves in.
