HOLLY TOWNSHIP (WJRT) — (08/25/09)–Police in Oakland County are tracking new leads in the case of murdered sex offender.

Dennis McCarthy, 64, had been out of jail only a week when he was stabbed to death on Sunday.

Groveland Township Michigan State Police investigators said for the first time Tuesday that something that was said during the crime may lead them to the man’s killer.

Meanwhile, more is being learned about his past.

The shock came early Sunday morning when police say an intruder stabbed McCarthy at his Holly Township home.

Tracy Price describes his former neighbor as a handyman who liked to help people out.

“He was just a nice guy,” he said.

But court records paint a different picture of McCarthy. Last year, he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his grandson.

In 2004, he was acquitted after being accused of fondling his granddaughter and several other girls. McCarthy’s son was in the process of suing him for allegedly fondling a second granddaughter.

“He always professed his innocence to me,” Price said. “He said everything was just kind of blown out of proportion. I really didn’t know what to believe.”

Other neighbors told a similar story off-camera, that McCarthy was a great neighbor and that his past was misunderstood.

Investigators are busy interviewing neighbors and family members.

A statement was made during the commission of the crime, the details of which police can’t reveal.

However, a statement made by the perpetrator leads police to believe that this case is connected to his criminal past.

And while police don’t believe this was a random act of violence, it has shaken up this otherwise quiet lakefront community.

“I hate going to sleep at night, wondering if someone’s going to come knocking on my door,” Price said.

We tried to reach McCarthy’s attorney for comment. He did not return our calls.
