How aware of you about the role of search-and-rescue canines?

For 11 straight days, Mizu crawled along precarious "I" beams and threaded her way through smoldering debris, looking for the bodies of people who did not survive the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.
But unlike humans on the scene, Mizu could not wear a gas mask or safety goggles to protect her from carcinogens. She needed her nose to work.
However, survivors of the World Trade Center disaster have recorded other health problems, most of them respiratory and psychological.
In April, a coroner in New Jersey made the first apparent ruling linking a death to cleanup work at the World Trade Center site. James Zadroga was a 34-year-old police detective who developed respiratory disease after working 470 hours at the site. He died in January of respiratory failure. As for Mizu, Kidd said he’s amazed his partner is still alive. "Most disaster dogs are dead by 7 or 8 because of the hazardous environments that they work in, and the wear and tear.

look, you have such a variety of answers….lol
yes i know them and love them….
have a pup in the yard that would be a good candidate…
i have done the preliminary screening and training on several…
{i am good with behavior and temperament}..{also, have trained my share of seeing eye dogs}…two totally different types of dogs….but both very service orientated…

a S&R dog is truly a canine 4×4. they are fearless and yet, not aggressive….protective and yet not reclusive or shy…
they must be easy to train, and remain exhubrehant during the process….they are unique pups, probably 1 in every 10 litters can cut it…
you know there are two kinds of dogs….those you train or condition, or those who train or condition you….
dogs come, very obidient, willing and easy to train, the dog that would lay down its life…because you asked it to, ..{intelligence} i.e most shephards, and working dogs..
and/or
dogs come to us…inbedded with enough instinct or common sense, that some people i know would envy them. the harder to train…free thinker {wisdom}…the dog that comes up with its own solutions, the one that reasons its way, and your way, out of bad sitituations…..{a lot of assistance dogs, fall in here} most of your nordic breeds, the sheep-herding dogs, left to guard the flock…..

the S&R pup is unique, he is the rare pup that comes with both.
the intelligence and willingness to be trained,
and the wisdom, and resourcefulness to apply its own inherinant abilitities in a situation that perhaps, its training did not cover, or does not apply.

anyone can train an S&R dog…..start with agility training….
and then scent…
do you have a pup that qualifies?….should you train that pup to help others?
