You really need to give a little more info, such as what tribe of Indians are you descended from, what state or area, etc. Then perhaps we can direct you to the right place.

Why are Texas records so much more accessible than those of other states?

May 20th, 2010 3 comments

I have many ancestors and relatives who have lived in Texas, but I occasionally need to access birth, marriage, death records from other states, and many of them are not accessible through Ancestry.com or any other site.

Hmmm, I don’t know — it sounds unlikely that Texas has determined its policy on public records access entirely as a way to make money off of one specific website.

More likely, they just want to have a high level of customer service.

Where can I find birth, marriage, death, and burial records for Switzerland?

April 9th, 2010 2 comments

My great grandparents immigrated from Sevelen, St. Gallen, Switzerland and some ancestors I believe lived in Berne, Switzerland also. I’m trying to find out how to access public records, such as birth, marriage, and death records. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Swissdece…,

Here is some information, you will have to read it and do what it says to do.

Can somebody try to find information for me on Ancestry.com?

I am looking for information on John Argos born about 1680 in Bristol, England and died in James City, Virginia. I believe he came from England to James City, Virginia on a ship called the Merchant of Maryland. Any info on the ship would be great and if you can find any information on his son Alexander Argo born about 1694 In Sussex County, Delaware. Any info on whom they married and children and things like that would be great. If they were in the military at one point. Really just any records:birth, marriage, death, military anything to give me a lead. Thanks

Is this him?

is there anywhere on here that you can view public records free?

March 24th, 2010 2 comments

when i go to the sites that say it is free to view public records, it always asks for a credit card number. The link will say its free but its not. Is there any where on here that it is actually free to search AND view public records….death, birth, marriage…….any help will be appreciated… thanks

The LDS church does NOT maintain records of living persons.. they have a huge collection of historical records. There are also many different definitions of what a public record might be (marriage? credit? death?). ALL of these things will be independent and located in different places, with different rules of accessibility.
If you are wanting to research your ancestry.. the best thing to learn is how to be explicit in terms of what it is that you want. A death record for a person who died in 1988 in Michigan can be completely different from a marriage record from the 1870s in Alabama.
A general rule is that records relating to living persons are going to normally have restrictions. You may find marriage records (current) at the courthouse locally.. a birth record for a baby in the last century (broadly speaking) will only be accessible to the parents or person concerned. The law will be different for various states.. different counties will have varying records posted (free) on a www.usgenweb.com site.
Almost everything you do in genealogy will involve looking at the INDIVIDUAL person, defining the locality and time frame, then going for the SPECIFIC piece of information that you want.

Could someone help me with my genealogy?

I am trying to find parents of Isaac Osman from Shamokin, PA, Northumberland Co.

He was born in Nov 1846 and died 12 Nov 1906. I have tons of info on his Wife Harriet S. Bordner, and his children,Emma M, Minnie N, William F, Alice L, but I can’t seem to find any info about his parents/grandparents.

His wife Harriet was remarried to a Frank E. Osman/Osmun after his death so it is possible that he and Frank were related.

The rumor is that either Isaacs dad or grandfather came from Turkey but I cant prove this either.

In 1860 there are 2 records for Isaac Osman in Pennsylvania, 1 born abt 1855 and 1 born abt 1848.

I thought the 1848 one was probably the one I wanted as the cencus says:
John Osman 40-Head,
Mary A 40-PA,
John, 16-PA,
Isaac, 12-PA,
Mary Miller 15

But, One reason I cant call John a match as his father is because according to familysearch.org, the Isaac Osman born in 1848 birth and death dates do not match up with the the Issac I am looking for.
Familysearch has an Isaac born 21 MAY 1848 Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania and a death of 16 DEC 1880. My Isaac was born November 1846 and died 12 Nov 1906. I know this info to be correct based on his headstone and cemetery records in Shamokin, PA.

I am looking for a document that says who Issac’s dad was before I call it a possitive match. So far I havent found any record of Isaac that lists his dads name.

In order to be absolutely certain of Isaac’s parent’s names, you really really need his birth, marriage or death record which are difficult to find on-line for Pennsylvania.

There is only a 3 week wait and $9.00 fee to order a copy of a death record by mail from The Department of Health’s Division of Vital Records. You can find the request form and mailing address is at this link:
Pennsylvania death records from 1906-current
http://www.dsf.health.state.pa.us/health/cwp/view.asp?a=168&Q=202338#DeathMulti

For Pennsylvania vital records prior to 1906, you need to contact the County Courthouse. Contact information is at this link:
http://www.dsf.health.state.pa.us/health/cwp/view.asp?a=168&q=202240

Good luck, I hope you get your answers.

I found what I needed from Canada and was able to trace my ancester to michigan but can’t get the above information at ancestry.com. this information is need to go future any help is welcom

One of the best resources for Michigan (or any state) is the State Library. They have records on microfilm that you can borrow by going to your local library and requesting an inter library loan, where they will send the microfilm to your local library.

Here is the official Michigan website and has the answers to your question on how, what and where records can be found.
http://www.michigan.gov/hal/0,1607,7-160-17449_18635—,00.html

Another source is your nearest LDS Church Family Research Center. They also have access to microfilm and can lookup the film you need, order it from Salt Lake City, and allow you to browse the film. It used to cost $2.50 for them to rent it for 2 weeks. You can search their site at www.familysearch.org.

From the Michigan site:
The Library of Michigan has entered into an agreement with The Generations Network (Ancestry.com) to digitize these Michigan death records. Funding from the Talbert and Leota Abrams Foundation is making this digitization project possible. The death records will be loaded into a database that will be indexed and easily searchable. All scanned images will be provided for FREE on the Library of Michigan’s Web site. Users from across the country will be able to access the database and download death records from the comfort of their home computer.

Can anyone help me find PARENTS of Melissa Jane Hoover (AKA Jane Stephens) b. 4 Jul 1832 in Pennsylvania?

December 14th, 2009 1 comment

Mainly trying to find out who her father is. 1880 census in Ness Co., KS lists both her parents b. in PA.

What do I know is she married John Stephens bef.1850 probably in PA (RootswebWC shows IA) but they’re listed in Beaver, Clarion Co. PA as married in 1850. They had 9 children in Benton Co. and Dallas Co, IA. from 1851-1873, then moved to Ness Co., KS btwn. 1873.-1880. John in Ness Co. listed as widowed.in 1885 census.

Can anyone find her birth, marriage or death record – or something that shows her father’s name or mother’s maiden name?

Thank you very much in advance – I appreciate all efforts in trying.
Hmmm no answers. Any suggestions on where I could find this information?

Kay,

I believe I located an online tree w/ her on it. Unfortunately, it does not mention her parents. But, if you are not familiar w/ this tree, you might want to contact the person who posted it and see if he knows of someone who might have further information. You can see this tree w/o a subscription to ancestry.com

i’m looking for a death record certificate for somebody that died in Veracruz, Mexico. how would i get that.

December 11th, 2009 5 comments

who can i contact. where do i go or who do i call.

Hi, the first thing you need to know is exactly in which town or city of the state of Veracruz the death certificate was given. This is because Registro Civil, which is the office in charge of birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates depends directly from the Municipal (county) authorities. You can probably then google "Registro Civil ________(town’s name)" to find the address and telephone number and then call to find out what you need to do to get a copy, I think that someone has to go in person to the Registro Civil office to pay for it (less than 10 dollars) and then it takes about two days to get it.
I live in Xalapa, Veracruz, if you need any help you can e-mail me.
