How to research the cause of a friend’s death?

April 5th, 2011 2 comments

Had a weird dream so I went online to look up an old friend. Discovered that he died in 2004.

I would like to find out what happened….

Not interested in making contact with the family.

Is there any way I can find out cause of death via public records? If so, how do I go about it?

See if the local newspaper (where he died) has an olline archive search, you may be able to read either a news story (if an accident) or an obit that gives more details.
If you have the actual date he passed you might be able to search town records – but would almost certainly have to do that in person.

Insurers paying out on life insurance, proof of good health forms?

March 14th, 2011 3 comments

After a person with life insurance dies, I imagine that the ins. company has various things in place. Maybe a cursory check of the circumstances, maybe some information as to the cause of death – anything that might trigger a denial of payment for excluded scenarios.

And then probably if some red flags go up, the investigation gets deeper.

However I’m noticing that to pay a little bit of money for some extra term life insurance through my employer (actually through Minnesota Life ), I’m being asked questions that are virtually impossible to answer. Example, every doctor I’ve ever visited in the past 3 years, etc. etc. etc. Stuff that I just don’t keep records of and wouldn’t even come close to being able to answer accurately. So I’m just kind of breezing through it. Example, i put down that in 1/1/2007 I had the flu, even though it might be more like twice and certainly not on 1/1 of any year.

Anyway, the point being…….. (and I have nothing major to hide from them, this is just a question about just "how picky" ins. companies are, in trying to figure out excuses to deny payment.

If I die, are they going to refer to old forms that I filled out like this Proof of Good Health, and then demand – hey – we found a record of this guy going to the doctor once, but he claimed he hadn’t gone in that year, back on his POGH form, so denying payment.

Ya know something crazy like that.

Does anyone have any true insight as to just how bad it is, in terms of ins. companies denying pmt on life ins. policies, based on really minor stuff? I would think this kind of thing would apply to most applicants, since most people really aren’t going to remember or be able to include all this crap in perfect detail. Even tho technically, the form asks for it.

The proof of death, is the official death certificate. The official CAUSE of death, is noted, on that certificate.

Insurance companies don’t try very hard to deny a claim – unless there’s a likelihood of FRAUD on the part of the insured. Policies have a two year "contestable" period, where if you die in that two years, they can investigate the truthfulness and accuracy of what you stated on your life insurance application. If they find that you lied, then they do not pay out the death benefit. For instance, if you lied about being a smoker, or if you "forgot" to mention that you have cancer.

Also during this two year period, suicide is not covered.

If it turns out you died of cancer, and neglected to mention that you’ve had chemo twice a week for the last six months, on your application, there will be a problem.

If you forgot to mention that you had the flu four years ago, not a problem.

Are there any truely free ways to find death records in california?

California Death Records 9,366,786 records from 1940 thru 1997

Warning 1: It is an index; the most you’ll get is name, sex, birthdate, birth state, father’s surname, mother’s maiden name, residence at time of death, death date. That’s the most; many records have blank fields.

Warning 2: It is supported by advertising. The ads rotate. Sometimes the ad asks for a name and leads you to a pay site. Scroll down past the ad.

www.findagrave.com is nation-wide and free. It has some entries for California. The entries range from the simple (John Smith, 1903 – 1971) to the elaborate; some have biographies, cause of death (especially if the person died in an accident, in battle, or of a disease) and links to spouses and/or parents and/or children.

You can find obituaries in old newspapers on microfilm in libraries. They usually don’t mention cause of death, but they usually have a mini-biography.

Public Death or Police Records?

April 11th, 2010 4 comments

I’m trying to learn more about the death of a family member that occured in 1985. I have reason to believe I haven’t been told the truth regarding the cause of death and I’m hoping I can learn more by reviewing police records of the incident. I know the full name and social security number of the individual. Where do I go to get police records related to this persons death and perhaps new articles written at the time?

For free, check out http://www.crimcheck.com , they have an extensive free public records section.

But since you would have to do the research yourself which can lead to missing out on information, I would recomend http://www.easybackgroundchecks.com , they offer statewide background checks for $15. They also offer nationwide background checks for $30

Your best bet may be to find the archives of the local newspaper for Toquerville in 1873. If the paper doesn’t mention the deaths of these specific children, it may describe an epidemic that was in progress in the area at the time.

What really killed Mozart?

March 30th, 2010 8 comments

Strep throat may have killed Mozart

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The death of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the age of 35 may have been caused by complications stemming from strep throat, according to a Dutch study published on Monday. Since the composer’s death in 1791, there have been various theories about the cause of his untimely end, from intentional poisoning, to rheumatic fever, to trichinosis, a parasitic disease caused by eating raw or undercooked pork.

On his death certificate it was officially recorded that the cause of death was hitziges Frieselfieber, or "heated miliary fever," referring to a rash that looks like millet seeds.

But researchers from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands said studies on his death have generally been based on less-than-reliable evidence, like accounts from people who witnessed Mozart’s final days, written decades after his death.

Their new study, reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine, was based on information from official death registers for Vienna in the winter of 1791 that places Mozart’s death in a wider context. He died in Vienna.

"Our findings suggest that Mozart fell victim to an epidemic of strep throat infection that was contracted by many Viennese people in Mozart’s month of death, and that Mozart was one of several persons in that epidemic that developed a deadly kidney complication," researcher Richard Zegers, of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, told Reuters Health.

Zegers and his colleagues said this "minor epidemic" of step throat, or streptococcal pharyngitis, may have begun in the city’s military hospital.

According to witness accounts, Mozart fell ill with an "inflammatory fever," which is consistent with strep throat, Zegers and his colleagues wrote in their report.

The composer, who wrote more than 600 works during his life, eventually developed severe swelling, "malaise," back pain and a rash, consistent with a strep infection leading to kidney inflammation known as glomerulonephritis.

Zegers said it was also possible that Mozart had scarlet fever, which, like strep throat, can be caused by infection with streptococcal bacteria, but this was less likely because witnesses said Mozart developed a rash near the end of his illness and with scarlet fever, the rash appears early on.

Another theory, might be likely, might not be. Streptococcal infection, rheumatic fever, tuberculosis, rubella, smallpox…. among the many estimated variants. I’m much more interested in his music than his death!

How do i find my mothers death certifacte and what information is on a death certifacte?

February 24th, 2010 2 comments

I was born in new york and the courts sealed my records, but i know my mothers name and just cant find anything. Didnt think that dead people had privacy rights. If anyone cant help please contact me. Look for family so that my kids can know there family.

I believe death certificates are public record. You would need to go to the county in which she lived and go to the records department…usually listed in the phone book under government offices. As for info on death certificate…usually just the basics like the person’s name, date of birth, residence, date and approx. time of death, cause of death, and the medical examiner verified the death and/or performed the autopsy.

In California, is it a requirement for the coroners office to do an autopsy?

January 18th, 2010 3 comments

My brother passed away at home unexpectedly. The mortuary says they wont do an autopsy but will use his medical records to determine the cause of death. We want an autopsy done because we feel his doctor possibly over medicated him and never gave a definite diagnosis for his health problems.

An autotpsy is required when someone dies under undetermined or suspicious circumstances or while not under the care of a doctor who will sign the death cert. You can have an autotpsy done at your own expense if the state will not perform one.

Sorry about your brother. Let me give you 50 cents worth of free advice. Try to let it go. Unless there are some definite signs of medical malpractice, all you will be doing is prolonging the suffering. I know it’s easy for me to say. But untimely deaths like this always leave people looking for answers that sometimes are not there.

Peace out.
