Could this be them?

1910 Census – Ellis County, Texas
Henry Hall – M – B – 49 – married 10 yrs – TX-UNK-UNK – Farm Laborer
Lena Hall – wife – F – B – 30 – mother of 6 kids, 5 now living – TX-TX-TX
A. D. Hall – son – M – B – 9 – TX-TX-TX
Otra(?) Hall – dau – F – B – 7 – TX-TX-TX
Nora Hall – dau – F – B – 4 – TX-TX-TX
Hubbard Hall – son – M – B – 3 – TX-TX-TX
Ezell Hall – dau – F – B – 11 mos – TX-TX-TX

1920 Census – Ellis County, TX
Henry Hall – M – B – 53 – widow – TX-LA-LA – Laborer, Farm
Ida Hall – dau – F – B – 18 – TX-TX-TX – Laborer, Farm
Votie Hall – dau – F – B – 17 – TX-TX-TX – Laborer, Farm
Nora Hall – dau – F – B – 15 – TX-TX-TX – Laborer, Farm
Evella Hall – dau – F – B – 9 – TX-TX-TX
Henry Hall – son – M – B – 5 – TX-TX-TX

(I bet the "Ida" is really "A.D.", and the census taker just heard it wrong and figured it was a girl).

Here’s A.D. Hall in 1930:

1930 Census – Collin County, TX
A. D. Hall – neg – 27 – widow – TX-TX-TX – Farmer, General Farm
Leoala(??) Hall – sister – neg – 18 – TX-TX-TX
Henry Hall – brother – neg – 16 – TX-TX-TX

The "Leoala" is very hard to read, and I don’t know who that could be if Voltra and Elegea have already died, and if Elegea is the same person as Ezell/Evella. Next door to A.D. is probably their sister Nora:

Jerry Anderson – neg – 42 – TX-TX-TX – Farmer, General Farm
Nora Anderson – wife – neg – 24 – TX-TX-TX

Where is Josiah Heath Benson in 1870?

July 18th, 2010 1 comment

Josiah Heath Benson had two wives and 11 children. I have him in 1850, 1860 and 1880. He eludes me in 1870. Can any of you warm, wise, witty and, above all, devilishly handsome regulars find him?

I found him in other sources, too, so don’t waste your time duplicating my efforts there. I’m just annoyed that I can’t find him in 1870. Here is his data and the birth data of the children who are probably alive in 1870:

Census:
1850 Pike County, Illinois
1860 Washington Twp, Appanoose, Iowa
1880 Vallejo Township (Now Petaluma), Sonoma, California

Josiah Heath Benson
born: 12 Mar 1819 Somerset County, Maryland
(Moved to Delaware in 1822, often recorded as b. Delaware)
Death: 24 Jun 1896 Petaluma, Sonoma, California
AFN: PPHS-HL

Both wives died before 1870. Children:

Margaret A. Benson, born: 1842/43 Illinois
Albert Benson, born: 18 Mar 1847 Illinois
Henry Benson, born: 31 Jan 1855 Appanoose County, Iowa
William Benson, born: 21 Apr 1856 Appanoose County, Iowa
Josiah H. Benson, born: 1857/58 Appanoose County, Iowa
Nathaniel W. Benson, born: 10 Oct 1859 Appanoose County, Iowa
Martha E. Benson, born: 5 Feb 1862
Laura E. Benson, born: 8 Feb 1864
Louis Emmet Benson, born: 6 Nov 1865

Thanks!

I have looked 6 ways from Sunday and I can’t find them either. My guess is that there were on the move somewhere between IA and CA and eluded the census taker. I found them in the 1880 census (as you did) and 7 of his 9 children still live with him.

Wish I could have helped more.

What happened to my great grandmother Fredricka Pollota (pallatz)?

You’ve fallen prey to a census taker with bad handwriting that was hard to transcribe. Try this from the 1900 census in Kenosha Co:

1900 United States Federal Census

And here’s the 1905 Wisconsin State Census:

She was dead by 1 Jun 1905. I’d check with the Kenosha County Clerk’s Office about the death certificate. Wisconsin was good at keeping them at that time. If you don’t find it in Kenosha Co, then check out Milwaukee or Lake Co IL

Here’s the only death of anyone named Frederika or a variant of who died in Kenosha Co in 1905 and is on the Wisconsin Death Index. There’s a possibility this is her maiden name…not uncommon to be reported that way. It’s off 28 days from the date you have, but it’s possible. You’d have to get the Clerk’s Office to verify it.
