There are a growing number of useful and free genealogy and family history resources, tools, and websites.

Family Search Website

One of the most active organizations in genealogy is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – the Mormon Church. Their flagship genealogy information FamilySearch website is one of the most comprehensive databases of family history and genealogical information in the world. What is more, it is a growing genealogy database that increases in size and scope with each passing day. The Mormon family search website is free to use and is well worth your time to explore.

Personal Ancestral File Free Genealogy Software

Again, from the Mormon Church, PAF – or Personal Ancestral File, is a free genealogy download available on the home page of the Family Search website. The PAF genealogy software is extremely powerful and user friendly and provides an excellent repository for all of your genealogy information. It has a robust pedigree or family tree feature as well as family group sheet templates to create your own extensive family history and genealogical information database.

Free Family History Information Centers

The Mormon Church has a very extensive network of Genealogy Libraries and Family History Centers. Listings for the family history centers can be found in the white pages under The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The centers are located in many cities and are staffed during the day and into the evenings with trained volunteers. The centers are equipped with an extensive array of computer and microfiche resources. Schedules may vary so it is wise to call to set an appointment. The genealogy centers are free to the public and the staff is typically well trained and helpful.

Public Records Databases

City, county, and State public records are available for your review with a little effort. These records are not always the easiest to navigate. But generally there is someone there who can assist you. You may be surprised to find a few nuggets of important genealogy information by searching these old records. Be aware that many of these old records have been transferred over the years to microfilm and microfiche. The family history centers of the Mormon church can provide advice on how to access these archived records. Public records databases may include information on wills, land and property deeds, marriage information, household census information, immigration records, and other vital pieces of family history and genealogy information.

Cemeteries

It can be exciting to search old cemeteries where you know that ancestors have lived and died. Quite often these cemeteries will contain the graves of one or more of your relatives. Headstones generally have very accurate information regarding birth, death, and often marriage dates. Some headstones even include information on children born to the deceased. A visit to one or more cemeteries in the vicinity of known ancestral homesteads can yield a great deal of genealogy information. It is wise to not only make careful notes when visiting these cemeteries but also to take photos of the ancestral headstones you discover. Don’t forget to note the name and location of the cemetery!

One of the largest and most popular sources for those researching their ancestry is the Mormon Church genealogy records. The Mormons, or Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (often abbreviated as LDS), have created an invaluable resource for those why may be on the quest for historical records. The Mormon Family History Library, housing thousands of documents and other records, is located in Salt Lake City, Utah; thankfully for those who are searching, the records are searchable from afar, via several different methods.

Access to the records that have been made available through the Family History Library is not limited to members of the Church itself. The records that consist of a complied collection of millions of microfilms, microfiche, books and handwritten records from across the globe are available, at no cost, to any person who wishes to access them. The records contain data from not only North America but also from Europe, and even as far away as China; the extensive collection of US records includes all of the US Census records from 1790-1920, as well as county and state records that can offers a rare source of family history. In the late ’60’s, the Church created the International Genealogical Index; a comprehensive listing of birth and marriage records of deceased individuals. An enormous amount of effort has gone into the creation and maintenance of this index; including extensive travel and research, by volunteers, into the millions of names that are researchable. The Index also houses military and social security death records that can assist with family history research by providing much sought after dates.

While the Family History Library is open to the public there are a number of ways to access the records in lieu of a trip to Salt Lake City! The most commonly used and easiest method is to search via the internet. It is important to note that while major efforts are underway to digitize the records, not all of the records are yet available for online searching. The information contained within their database is simply data; there are very few scanned copies of actual documents. So do bear in mind that there may be a few errors of the human nature.

An interesting offering by the Mormon Church is the Family Registry; this registry will help to connect you with other researchers who may be doing their own research on another branch of the same tree that you are investigating. A good portion of the research that you are seeking may have already been located by another researcher. Making contact with other researchers is a great way to not only add to your knowledge but it is also a great way to share your own research.

Making direct contact with the Mormon library is, in itself, a good way to get started with your research into Mormon Church genealogy records. While the church staff cannot do your research for you, their helpful hints and tips will go a long way towards pointing you in the right direction to ensure that you get the most out of your searching. Their knowledge of the expansive archives will help to ensure that you are looking in the right place!

Why do people hate Mormons?I mean, really?

March 21st, 2011 12 comments

Okay, I am from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. (or "Mormon" to those of you who have small intellectual skills) I am coming here today of Yahoo Answers to propose a question to the public. This question of coarse "What do people have against Mormons?" and I don’t want facts that you can’t back up, by saying " oh your Jesus isn’t our Jesus" there is only ONE Jesus Christ.Savior of the world.
Before you start ranting about how crappy the LDS church is, let me clear up a few things for you.
#1 We are not a cult. If you are naming us a cult and you have religion then your the cat calling the kettle black. All religious practices can be viewed as "cults" here is the link to prove it.http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cult

#2 We are not Polygamist. In the LDS religion we are married to ONE person for all eternity. Polygamy was practiced back in the days of Brigham Young.(the 1800’s!) and not because he wanted more than one wife. OOOH NO! it wasn’t for that. Its because of a thing called Mormon Pioneers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_pioneers) and the Mormon Batallion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_Battalion) which were instances where LDS were kicked out of there homes and they were burned down because of their beliefs. They had to travel from New York to Utah by FOOT with handcarts, wagons, and oxen or horse pulling them.(bringing what little belongings they could salvage. On this treck many of the Men died , i mean, lets face it? who probably did most of the heavy duty work and MOST of the walking.not only that but wives lost husbands and parents lost children (babys even) it was difficult for many of them and it was sad but they did all this in the name of faith. Brigham Young probably married multiple women (as probably did other men) because the women had NO ONE to take care of them once they were their. also, polygamy was outlawed in the U.S. in 1882. Brigham Young died in 1877. (also, polygamy was widely accepted in the world before then) even the BIBLE has it? remember the bible talking about harlots and mistresses? oh ya… the Mormon church TOTALLY started polygamy. and we ENCOURAGE IT RIGHT?*sarcasm*. haha! do some research people.

#3 No we do not worship Joseph Smith or some guy called Mormo. Joseph smith is known for restoring what was said inside the Golden Plates. A document passed down from Nephi down to his last Decendent Mormon. The Golden Plates are not found today, because they are too sacred and lets face it. Who would be puzzled reading a dead language? or the matter of fact. people might steal the plates made from PURE gold and sell it. and lose the records forever. Its like someone taking the original documents of the bible burning them or defecating them. Yes, you wouldn’t like that either would you?.Mormon(who wrote the last book) like i said was the last decedent of of Lehi (who wrote the first book) fallowed by Nephi and so on. Mormon had to watch the death of his people and was an outcast in his own land.(http://www.suite101.com/content/who-was-mormon-a115600) He buried the golden then appeared to Joseph so that he could restor them to us. That we could have the truth. (unlike the bible that has been changed many, many, many, many,MANY times and different versions have been made.) The closest to the true bible is the original King James version that was translated from Latin. and no. Joseph Smith didn’t make it up. Joseph Smith had up to a 3rd grade education and wasn’t very smart. Neither was Oliver Cowdry! he was just the scribe. Could you translate a dead foreign language at the third grade level if you grew up on a farm and only knew how to read the bible and do farm work? NOT EVEN!! so yes. that answers that for you. Also there are STILL have SURVIVING copies of the FIRST EDITION of the Book of Mormon though. So you know this thing hasn’t been manipulated my the church (or anyone else) in any way.

#4 Yes we have temples in which we are sealed to our spouses for time and all eternity.(pretty cool huh?) and yes we wear magic underwear (undergarments is what we call them) oh? you think thats funny? haha! then why are you wearing a "t" around your neck? haha! thats right. your cross stands for something and so do our garments. They are just as sacred and stand for things and protect us.sound familiar?(you only get them when you marry though)

#5 We are not prejudice or hate anyone. (this is for you out there who think LDS are against "homosexuality") We are not. We don’t approve of it in our temples, because temples are only for
men and woman marriage (you know, the two people you need to make children) and our church is mainly focused of having eternal families. soooo…my point made.I know people who are LDS who are gay and attend church. We don’t kick gay people out or hate them. We view the temple as a sacred..)
I have a strong
The LDS religion is focused on Jesus Christ our savior of the world. We are a family based religion and believe that families will be together forever. It is my testimony that the LDS church is the truest thing to THE truth I have come across. Anything I have questioned it has been answered and I am left unquestioning the church and having nothing but love and faith and complete joy from it. I wish they world could know this feeling, this great love I have and feel in my soul. 🙂 It is truly amazing in every sense of the word. I love my religion, and i wouldn’t deny it ever.. I know its words are the truth and I know the book of mormon speaks the truth and is the completion to the bible. Those two books are the complete gospel of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. And there is nothing in the world that could ever make me leave this love I feel. The sense of belonging I feel, and the sense of family I feel from attending church every Sunday….. :’) I love it with all my heart and so

I just wanted to thank you for posting this. Even though a lot of non members aren’t going to read this, you put it out there for them to read.

But, my only suggestion is not to pick on other religions in it. I grew up wearing that "t" around my neck, and that was a way I showed my faith. But, now that I’m becoming a part of the LDS religion, I’m thankful that there’s people out there who aren’t afraid to ask questions like this.

There’s a quote I like, and it says "people like to throw rocks at things that shine". Which is definitely true. People want to try to burn down LDS churches, people try to protest and write on temple grounds about how "terrible" the church is, and all the LDS do is sit back and thank GOD that we don’t despise people as much as they do us. If people want to spend their lives picking on a religion that they’re apparently so against, then go for it. I have better things to do than deal with the rumors they’re spreading.

Trust me, I’ve heard just about every ex-Mormon thing out there. And I come to find out that many are false accusations, or they’re someone’s statements. People just try to tear down what I think they deep down know is right.

Also, even Jesus told us that people would hate his followers. But He’s been through it all. Every type of temptation, or pain, or betrayal imaginable, he’s been through. Some people in the Bible even mentioned to rejoice when people persecute you.

So keep your faith, and make sure to pray and read the scriptures. Your testimony will always power over what exs or anti’s say.

Mormons Really Baptized Ted Bundy Again!! Why-y-y-y?

December 19th, 2009 11 comments

From Excellent XMormon site:
http://www.exmormonforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1128&start=0

[[Theodore Robert Bundy, prolific serial killer and rapist—one of the most notorious and despised murderers in U.S. history—has been posthumously baptized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Proxy rites for Bundy, consisting of a baptism and an “endowment” ceremony, were performed on May 28, 2008 in the Jordan River Utah Temple, a Mormon temple in South Jordan, a suburb 16 miles south of downtown Salt Lake City.

Theodore Bundy, who became better known as Ted Bundy, was born on November 24, 1946, in Burlington, Vermont. He is currently listed in the LDS Church’s database of posthumous ordinances, the International Genealogical Index (IGI), under his birth name, Theodore Robert Cowell, to conceal his criminal identity.

Between 1974 and 1978, Ted Bundy raped and killed an untold number of young women in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, and Florida. Authorities believe his victims numbered well over 100. On January 24, 1989, after a ten-year stay of execution, Bundy was executed in the electric chair at Florida State Prison in Starke, Florida. Many spectators cheered and toasted his death with champagne.

In the fall of 1974, during the time he was murdering innocent women, Ted Bundy moved to Salt Lake City. The following year, he joined the LDS Church. Bundy’s involvement with the Mormon religion was apparently short-lived. His name may have been removed from Mormon membership rolls because of his criminal record.

Throwing justice to the wind, less than twenty years after Ted Bundy’s execution, and in the state of Utah—where Bundy once roamed and brutally killed young women without remorse—the LDS Church has secretly reclaimed its most cold-blooded killer.]]

This ‘question’ was debunked when you asked it a couple days ago.

Mormons, with John and 3 Nephite Apostles never tasting death, why did the priesthood need to be restored?

December 19th, 2009 6 comments

If the below texts are true, then how did the priesthood leave the earth?

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 7
Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Oliver Cowdery, at Harmony, Pennsylvania, April 1829, when they inquired through the Urim and Thummim as to whether John, the beloved disciple, tarried in the flesh or had died. The revelation is a translated version of the record made on parchment by John and hidden up by himself. HC 1: 35–36.
1–3, John the Beloved shall live until the Lord comes; 4–8, Peter, James, and John hold gospel keys.
1 And the Lord said unto me: John, my beloved, what desirest thou? For if you shall ask what you will, it shall be granted unto you.
2 And I said unto him: Lord, give unto me power over death, that I may live and bring souls unto thee.
3 And the Lord said unto me: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, because thou desirest this thou shalt tarry until I come in my glory, and shalt prophesy before nations, kindreds, tongues and people.
4 And for this cause the Lord said unto Peter: If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? For he desired of me that he might bring souls unto me, but thou desiredst that thou mightest speedily come unto me in my kingdom. (D&C 7:1-4)

THIRD NEPHI
THE BOOK OF NEPHI
THE SON OF NEPHI, WHO WAS THE SON OF HELAMAN
CHAPTER 28
Nine of the Twelve desire and are promised an inheritance in Christ’s kingdom when they die—The Three Nephites desire and are given power over death so as to remain on the earth until Jesus comes again—They are translated and see things not lawful to utter, and they are now ministering among men. Between A.D. 34 and 35
1 And it came to pass when Jesus had said these words, he spake unto his disciples, one by one, saying unto them: What is it that ye desire of me, after that I am gone to the Father?
2 And they all spake, save it were three, saying: We desire that after we have lived unto the age of man, that our ministry, wherein thou hast called us, may have an end, that we may speedily come unto thee in thy kingdom.
3 And he said unto them: Blessed are ye because ye desired this thing of me; therefore, after that ye are seventy and two years old ye shall come unto me in my kingdom; and with me ye shall find crest.
4 And when he had spoken unto them, he turned himself unto the three, and said unto them: What will ye that I should do unto you, when I am gone unto the Father?
5 And they sorrowed in their hearts, for they durst not speak unto him the thing which they desired.
6 And he said unto them: Behold, I aknow your thoughts, and ye have desired the thing which John, my beloved, who was with me in my ministry, before that I was lifted up by the Jews, desired of me.
7 Therefore, more blessed are ye, for ye shall never taste of death; but ye shall live to behold all the doings of the Father unto the children of men, even until all things shall be fulfilled according to the will of the Father, when I shall come in my glory with the powers of heaven.
8 And ye shall never endure the pains of death; but when I shall come in my glory ye shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye from mortality to immortality; and then shall ye be blessed in the kingdom of my Father. (3 Nephi 28:1-8)

Also, I am wondering why there are no reports of these 4 still being alive, but thats another question.

It didn’t need to be, but as Josephs story grew, something had to be done, thus his convenient "revelations".
