July 6th, 2011 3 comments

I was wondering where the MAIN new york public library is in Manhattan. I was told that at the main branch, they would have birth/death records in the genealogy section of deceased ancestors
ill take the 7 train cuz i grew up using that train…im not even 20 and i remember when the 7 train was red before they changed it to silver lol

Main Branch of New York Public Library is located at 5th Av & 42nd St which is called Stephen A. Schwarzman Building which is next door to Bryant Park.and 5th-6th Av/42nd St Subway Stations.

how to search death records for the state of new york?

New York City Death Index
1891 to 1897 Manhattan
1862 to 1897 Manhattan and Brooklyn
1898 to 1948 All Boroughs
If you have ever tried to use the New York City death index for the early years, you will appreciate this latest database. If you look at the microfilm for these early years you know that you have to look at every month, every year and every borough.

Now the volunteers of the Genealogy Federation of Long Island have put these records in a very searchable database that will enable you to search with just a push of the button. Phase 1 of this effort covered the period 1891 – 1907. The second phase added the years 1908 through 1936 and will eventually include the indexes up to 1948. http://www.italiangen.org/NYCDeath.stm
New York Death Records
Enter a first and/or last name to search New York death records. This website was created to provide genealogists with access to the New York death records from a single place. Additional information on how to obtain New York death certificates is available below.

You can search some of the indexes on Ancestry.com and you can also search the indexes at many New York Public libraries.

I´m so confused…Do I have to do this in person?

All birth and death records originating from the five boroughs of New York City (Bronx, Kings, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island) must be certified together with a Letter of Exemplification by the New York City Department of Health, http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doh/home.html Bureau of Vital Records, 125 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013. The original document must then be presented to the County Clerk’s Office in the county where the document was obtained to verify the signature on the Letter of Exemplification. The document can then be presented to the New York State Department of State for authentication.

I’m sure you can hire an atty or title company to do it; and often times it can be done by mail; but call the clerk’s office you’ll be filing at to make sure of the details (SASE< attention of who, time frames, fees if any)

Old New York or New- New York?

Our records all show
You are filthy but fine

But they shuttered your stores
When you opened the doors
To the cops who were bored
Once they’d run out of crime

New York, you’re perfect
Don’t please don’t change a thing

Your mild billionaire mayor’s
Now convinced he’s a king

So the boring collect
I mean all disrespect

In the neighborhood bars
I’d once dreamt I would drink

New York, I Love You
But you’re freaking me out

There’s a ton of the twist
But we’re fresh out of shout

Like a death in the hall
That you hear through your wall

New York, I Love You
But you’re freaking me out

New York, I Love You
But you’re bringing me down

New York, I Love You
But you’re bringing me down

– i couldnt fit all the lyrics but i was just listening to this song by LCD Soundsytem.

And, now im only 15, so i never really got to experience this New York, that the song portrays. I love living here with all my heart, but did i miss out big time missing the "old" new york of the 70’s and 80’s?

Yeah you missed out big-time.

New York in the 80s was like living in Rome under Nero.

We had Queen Ed presiding from city hall, the East Village was Clubland, there were the Tompkins Square riots…

CBGBs was still open, you could eat Thai noodles, drink Russian vodka, listen to American punk on a Japanese stereo, and you didn’t have to be wealthy to live in Manhattan.
