March 15th, 2011 3 comments

I live in Texas- my parents diviorced 15 years ago and since then unaware to me she has kept all of his letters and any form of communication hidden from me. I was informed 2 days ago thru the attorney generals office – that my father was now listed as deceased. Thats it I ran a search and the only info I could get was that he died september 24,2008 in port richey florida and he was cremated. I need help finding my rights as his daughter to access his information such as siblings, last will and testimonys, and offical cause of death. Basicialy I want to find out as much as possible about him as I am not able to even visit a grave site? Please help- my family hated him and I have no support I have search online for for days finding anything I can and this is all I have. I f anyone knows of anything I can do please let me know?

Facts: Lewis william wood
02/07/1953 – 09/24/2008 died at age 55
Born in michigan- died in new port richey, florida (online it said ss listed as california)
divorced from: Tina Wood- Texas
known children: Ashley & Adam Wood Juanita (half sister I only heard of but no other info)
No alive relatives on his side
Please help in my search to know my deceased father – also why was I informed 2 years after the fact? Why Did it take that long?
~*~*~*~ Thank you for taking the time to help- as stated below-
The TEXAS attorney general sent the notification to my mother because of child support- back pay

I looked at the letter and althought I know she would not of told me the letter was mailed out 2 days before I saw it

And yes I did ask her and she ofcourse denies any letters were ever sent or recieved by him to us

Yes found funeral home and called but b/c privacy laws they could tell me nothing but he had past and he was cremated- thats where I hit a road block

thank you so much for any help- it truly means the world to me

> she has kept all of his letters and any form of communication hidden from me.

You could threaten to sue her for them. She might just burn them, though, and lie about it.

> the only info I could get was that he died september 24,2008 in port richey florida

You’ll have to write to the county there, prove you are related (A Xerox of your driver’s license and birth certificate should do it) and buy a copy of his death certificate. It will have cause of death and who did the cremation. The funeral home may have a copy of his obituary; it may not. If not, you can try writing to the county library, sending a SASE and a small donation. They will usually look it up for you. I looked for 20 minutes and didn’t see any obit on-line.

> siblings,

That will be in the obituary, maybe.

> last will

You’ll have to write to the probate court in his county, and will probably have to buy a copy.

> official cause of death.

Death certificate,, above.

> Basically I want to find out as much as possible about him

If his obit says he was a member of the Elks Club and First Methodist, you could write to both, explain your problem and ask if any member who knew him would send you their memories.

> also why was I informed 2 years after the fact? Why Did it take that long?

Just some guesses:
a) Your mother hates you
b) Your mother didn’t think it was important
c) He left you a million dollars and she is spending it as fast as she can
d) None of the above

Are you sure you have his name and his mother’s name correctly.

There is a James Wellington Severs born on Oct. 6, 1868 at Pleasants, West Virginia, to the parents, William and Louisa Ellen Severs.

When you click, "View the record image." at the top of the page, scroll down to entry #76 for the birth info.

Here is a great link when looking up birth, death, and marriage certificates on West Virginia relatives.

Some help needed on new clues to ancestry ; Does Family Crest allow you to access 1841 Scotland Census?

On this link, the page I’m looking for help on is the third link (1880 United States Federal Census Record). It says he was born in ”about 1873”, which sounds right, because on the 1930 Census, it says my grandfather (Thomas Madigan’s) father was 57 years old. It says his father’s name was Patrick. Does it say who his mother was? I know it says John Madigan was born in the state of New York, but does it say where specifically? Don’t worry about the 4th link. I already have the information from the second link on this link. If you’d like, you could check this page, to see if there’s any leads. On the 1st link, this may show where he was born. The year of death is probably off though. The 1910 Census, taken in April 15 1910, recorded John Madigan as 34 years ago, so it’s possible he was born in 1876 or 1877.

http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/HintList.aspx?ret=-706941509&pid=-706941509&tid=9210729&pg=0

If the first link is correct, than it’s possible the 1st link on this site is too. If John Madigan was born in 1873, it’s possible that his father, Patrick, was born before 1841, to be taking in the Scotland Census Record in 1841. This says he was born in Ireland, so I’m unsure of why he may have lived in Lanarkshire, Scotland at the time. I’m not sure what information this link will give, but what ever there is, whether it’s his parents, siblings or immigration record, it’s helpful. I’m not sure what the 2nd and 3rd links say, but there could be information there too.

http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/HintList.aspx?ret=-709380172&pid=-709380172&tid=9210729&pg=0

On this link, I’m looking to obtain information from the 3rd link. I previous found information on her in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Censuses, but there could be other information, such as what part of New York she may have been born in, that might be listed on this link. Or there may be useful information on her parents that weren’t listed in later Censuses.
My grandmother told me the name was Finley. It could be Findley though. I didn’t ask her how it was spelled, but I will next time I speak to her, if she knows.
My maternal grandfather’s mother’s maiden name is Finley (Or Findley). My maternal grandmother’s mother’s maiden name is Castino. On her father’s side, I’m not sure what paternal grandmother’s maiden name is, but I’ll look at the clues you’ve shown.

Did you know that you can access a transcript of the 1880 census for free at www.familysearch.org? Have a look 🙂

I’ll see if I can find anything else useful.

Edit
I don’t think that 1880 family with father Patrick is right.
If the 1910 census is right John should be married by 1900 but I found John (whose father is Patrick) still living at home in 1900.

John P Madigan
Home in 1900: Brooklyn Ward 13, Kings, New York
Age: 24
Birth Date: Jan 1876
Birthplace: New York
Race: White
Ethnicity: American
Gender: Male
Relationship to head-of-house: Son
Father’s Birthplace: Ireland
Mother’s Name: Mary
Mother’s Birthplace: Ireland
Marital Status: Single

Mary Madigan 50
Mary F Madigan 28
Terence F Madigan 24
John P Madigan 24

(Patrick had died but siblings match)

I’ll try and find the right John.

You said Margaret’s maiden name is Finley? Is that what your grandma told you? Have you seen this record from familysearch.org?

Vortex in Spring

Sophie and Landon were two ordinary siblings from a small town in the far northern part of upper Michigan. Their dad was a nice, gentle man; the main doctor of the town that everyone knew. Their mother was on of those ladies who, when it was finally nice out, would sit on her front porch with the other moms on the street. They would all wear their spring tone, Sunday brunch dresses and talk about the latest gossip while having teat and eating petit-fours. Since the town they lived in was so small and everyone knew everybody, Sophie and Landon were allowed to play almost anywhere around the house without having two be watched. Their parents would often let them go hangout by the pond back behind the house because nothing could ever happen to them there.
It was the third day of spring break and it wasn’t raining ridiculously hard outside. Sophie and Landon had just finished eating lunch and wanted to go play back at the pond. So they headed outside to ask their mom, since their dad been called off to work because there was a major pile-up on the highway, and with our hesitation, she told them yes. With this, Sophie and Landon made their away around the house to their pond.
This pond was very special to Sophie, Landon, and their family because it has been a spot where their family gathers for over a hundred years. Sophie and Landon’s dad told them a story about how when he was a kid he remembers when he was 10 and they had their annual family reunion how Uncle Joseph had persuaded all the men to race against all the women across the pond and back. Who won? The women. The pond was surrounded by huge oak trees and weeping willows except for a tiny smidge at the front which was the entrance to it. The water was clear as diamonds and the sand surrounding it was silky smooth and the gorgeous color of burnt sienna. On a depressing day, the sand was the warmth of your mothers’ arms around you telling you everything will be alright.
Upon reaching the edge of the pond, Sophie blurted out, “Can we skip rocks Landon? Please, pl, pl, pl, pleassssssse?” “Yeah, I guess,” Landon said as he started looking for skipping rocks. After 5 minutes of searching, Landon and Sophie spotted the most beautiful stones. They were a dark, charcoal gray, smooth as glass, and sparkled so bright you were almost blinded. There were only three so Landon said, “Ill skip one, then you can, and then Ill do the last one, because I’m older.” Sophie agreed and so they each picked up their respective stones and went to their favorite skipping spot.
Landon took his first one got it ready and threw. It skipped 16 times before it sank; a new record for Landon. Sophie thought she could do better and with all her might, she threw the stone and it went flying and ended up all the way on the other side of the pond. Sophie stuck her tongue out at Landon and did her happy dance. Landon didn’t care. He liked doing stuff with his sister and didn’t care if she was better at something then him. He took the third and final stone and swung it across the lake, but something weird happened. It went halfway across and then came skipping back. He threw it again and it just came right back to him. They both looked at the stone weirdly and were wondering how on earth that happened. It was like Landon had a magnetic pull on the stone. Sophie picked up the stone, looked at it for a few seconds, and all of a sudden, a bright red laser beam came whizzing out, startled Sophie which caused her to fall and hit her head. Landon freaked out, his sister could bleed to death and he didn’t know what to do. He tried to shake her to wake her up but she was unconscious. He picked up the stone again and out came this gargantuan swirling vortex that sucked up Landon, Sophie, and the stone that had started all of this trouble.
its based off of the picture strange day in july from the harris burdick mysteries i wrote this for my creative writing class by the way this is an unedited version so there may be some typing mistakes that i havent noticed yet

A compelling read, how old are you. Hmm, It’s very nice, and well structured, I wouldn’t call it "mystery" though, it’s more fantasy. A triumph I say. I’d give it a 9.5/10.
