Where is Josiah Heath Benson in 1870?

July 18th, 2010 1 comment

Josiah Heath Benson had two wives and 11 children. I have him in 1850, 1860 and 1880. He eludes me in 1870. Can any of you warm, wise, witty and, above all, devilishly handsome regulars find him?

I found him in other sources, too, so don’t waste your time duplicating my efforts there. I’m just annoyed that I can’t find him in 1870. Here is his data and the birth data of the children who are probably alive in 1870:

Census:
1850 Pike County, Illinois
1860 Washington Twp, Appanoose, Iowa
1880 Vallejo Township (Now Petaluma), Sonoma, California

Josiah Heath Benson
born: 12 Mar 1819 Somerset County, Maryland
(Moved to Delaware in 1822, often recorded as b. Delaware)
Death: 24 Jun 1896 Petaluma, Sonoma, California
AFN: PPHS-HL

Both wives died before 1870. Children:

Margaret A. Benson, born: 1842/43 Illinois
Albert Benson, born: 18 Mar 1847 Illinois
Henry Benson, born: 31 Jan 1855 Appanoose County, Iowa
William Benson, born: 21 Apr 1856 Appanoose County, Iowa
Josiah H. Benson, born: 1857/58 Appanoose County, Iowa
Nathaniel W. Benson, born: 10 Oct 1859 Appanoose County, Iowa
Martha E. Benson, born: 5 Feb 1862
Laura E. Benson, born: 8 Feb 1864
Louis Emmet Benson, born: 6 Nov 1865

Thanks!

I have looked 6 ways from Sunday and I can’t find them either. My guess is that there were on the move somewhere between IA and CA and eluded the census taker. I found them in the 1880 census (as you did) and 7 of his 9 children still live with him.

Wish I could have helped more.

death certificate on-line, I already have my great-grandad’s death certificate, but I simply cannot find my gr/gr/grans.
Her name was Martha Hatton (nee’ Beresford -Shaw, formerly Simpson.). She was born 15th April 1818 in Sneinton, Nottingham, UK, and died 14th August 1889, in Provo, Utah County, Utah. she is buried alongside her second husband William, along with his other two wives. I found my gr/grandads death certificate on this site,

I just want any thing regarding my gr/gr grans, death or just to see the entry into the burial record, can some one help please, anything regarding any of the others would be an absolute bonus.
Hello Mitchell, I have the information you posted for me , but many thanks anyway. I was hoping to get Martha’s death certificate on line or the entry that was put into the death index giving her last known address and any other information that one of the researchers may have uncovered that I might have missed. There is already a photo of the grave as I asked www.findagrave .com if they would do it for me. So I have seen the grave. I dont know where the Greasley information came from I have Martha’s baptism certificate and she was actually born in Sneinton. That’s where Martha and Thomas her first husband and the father to her eight children married. I have yet to find out where the marriage to William Hatton took place.

She is listed on find a grave you can ask for a photograph hopefully someone will go and take it for you. if this is you who posted the memorial then you probably aready know this =) I will seach around for the number to the funeral home who handled her remains if its listed on her death certificate, please edit and tell us the name which will help us find a phone number or address for the funeral home or at least gives a place to look for her funeral record.

*Death Records, Pre-1898
No governmental agencies were required by law to record deaths prior to 1898. Though not required to do so, some municipalities, such as Salt Lake City and Ogden, registered deaths prior to 1898. For other areas of Utah, try cemetery and burial records, newspaper obituaries, or private family and church records.*

Well thats disappointing and here I thought I had a lead, sorry
I’ll keep hunting.
