death records for michigan?

I am trying to find out if a person has died in Michigan.

It depends on the year, but Michigan does release a death index. Here’s a link to it: http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/pha/osr/gendisx/search2.htm

The only caveat is that records from the City of Detroit are often missing. If that’s your situation, the only hope is the SSDI, but a lot of people are missing from it. It also doesn’t include many records pre-1984 and none pre-1960

go to your search engine and try to find the newspapers in that area. Then you can narrow it down from there. You will go to the obituaries section in each newspaper you find.

Or, you can call vital records in the city and state and ask them.

have you tried the social security death index? If the person died since about 1960 to within the last few months, it should be there.
    It is free, at

Be sure to try variations of the name (mispelled first names, etc). Most entries show the last residence. That isn’t always where the person died. At least if you find them, it will confirm that they have passed away and includes all states.
