Are there free ways to search public birth and death records?

It depends on the years and the states. Some states are not allowing anyone access to birth and death records unless the person has been dead 50-100 years. Some states have these records online but only before 1900.

In the US you can search for death records for many people who have died in the last 60 years or so in the Social security Death Index. That’s a start.

It depends on if the person is still alive or if they are dead. If they are alive, most places won’t list this informtaion online. If they are dead, then you can try looking around at various genealogy websites. http://www.cyndislist.com has a lot of links to find places. Ancestry.com also has information but they are not a free site and it is not a cheap site to join.

Call the Health Departments in the areas you are searching or if you are near, go there, ask for birth and death data sheets for genealogists these are given free. The older years have more info, after a certain year they stopped putting parents name on them because of a law.
