Are Death Records Public Information?
Where can I find Death records online for southern california?
Hey Joy,
You can go to the City, Towns, or State. Here are some links for states. Remember the higher in government you go, the more it costs. Town first! You should be able to say you are a relative, to get a death record, to that extent they are public.

It will give MMN usually, and father’s surname for some women. It is better than the SSDI for that reason, worse because of the time period.
Death records are public, but you usually have to pay for copies and some states have restrictions on who can buy copies, to foil terrorists and identity thieves.
For instance, God Forbid, if your 23-year old brother died, someone could get his birth certificate, pretend to be him, and use it to get a false ID in his name. Or, if they got his death certificate they would have YOUR mother’s maiden name; that and your birthday and they’d be off to apply for credit cards in your name.
