what is the VI Editor in Linux? 5 stars will be awarded?

July 4th, 2010 2 comments

Im not sure what this is… my teacher gave me a bunch of text and wants me to get in theyre linux box whatever that means… heres an example?

Take the following text and figure out a way to get it to our linux box (hint: emailing to your unix account on our server is an easy way)

Use VI to replace the following words in the text:

"Bill Gates" with "Mr. Noodles",
"Gates" with "Noodles",
"Paul Allen" or "Allen" as "The Other Guy",
"Altair" as "WTF",
"Apple" as "The Prodigal Son",
"Tandy" as "Who?"
and "Microsoft" as "Blue Screen of Death"

"Bill Gates was born in Seattle in 1955, the second of three children in a well-to-do family. His father, William H. Gates II, was a lawyer, while his mother, Mary Gates, was a teacher, a regent of the University of Washington, and member of several corporate boards. Gates was first exposed to computers at school in the late 1960s with his friend Paul Allen, the son of two Seattle librarians. By the time Gates was 14, the two friends were writing and testing computer programs for fun and profit.

In 1972 they established their first company, Traf-O-Data, which sold a rudimentary computer that recorded and analyzed traffic data. Allen went on to study computer science at the University of Washington and then dropped out to work at Honeywell, while Gates enrolled at Harvard. Inspired in 1975 by an issue of Popular Electronics that showed the new Altair microcomputer kit just released by MITS Computer, Gates and Allen wrote a version of BASIC for the machine. Later that year Gates left college to work full time developing programming languages for the Altair, and he and Allen relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be near MITS Computer, where Allen took a position as director of software development. Gates and Allen named their partnership Micro-soft. Their revenues for 1975 totaled $16,000.

A year later, Gates published "An Open Letter to Hobbyists" in the Altair newsletter, in which he enjoined users to avoid illegally copied software. Arguing that software piracy prevented "good software from being written," Gates wrote prophetically, "Nothing would please me more than being able to hire ten programmers and deluge the hobby market with good software." In November 1976 Allen left MITS to devote his full attention to Microsoft, and the company’s tradename was registered. In 1977 Apple and Radio Shack licensed Microsoft BASIC for their Apple II and Tandy computers, with the Apple license going for a flat fee of $21,000. As Apple sold a million machines complete with BASIC, Microsoft’s unit revenues dropped to two cents a copy.

That same year Microsoft released its second programming language, Microsoft FORTRAN, which was followed in 1978 by a version of COBOL. Both were written for the CP/M operating system, one of many available in the rapidly expanding but still unstandardized microcomputer market. As CP/M was adopted by computer manufacturers including Sirius, Zenith, and Sharp, Microsoft became the leading distributor for microcomputer languages. By the end of 1978 Microsoft had 13 employees, a sales subsidiary in Japan, and $1 million in revenues. The following year Gates and Allen moved the company to Bellevue, Washington."

Note: This assignment, by no means, is a slam to Microsoft – without whom, I would not be able to pay my bills.
Points/Due Date
This assignment is worth 15 points – please submit it to Angel (Angel->Lessons->Wee3->DropBox:Assignment4 – The VI Editor) by Monday July 5th, 11:59pm. There will be a 30point quiz on VI commands open next Tuesday, July 6th.
My question isn’t do my homework for me please? its what exactly am I suppose to do, like take those words he has given me and replace them in the editor with the long essay or what?

vi is the oldest text editor out there. It was written by Bill Joy, who went on to co-found Sun Microsystems, when he was a grad student at the University of California at Berkeley and their Trustees own the copyright.

Linux is actually a kernel written originally to run programs written for UNIX. In fact, most of the basic programs come from BSD Unix which was Joy’s project, from the Free Software Foundation’s GNU Tools, and from the X-Windows consortium (now X.org).

Not all versions of Linux have vi and in fact you might just use vi on your unix account which should have it.

I’ve linked to a tutorial in sources, and Oh. In 1989 a temp agency sent me to a Providence RI engineering firm which sat me down at a unix terminal called up vi and said "type." That was MY introduction to vi. You won’t find it easy, but I assure you it will be easier/

Why is a school protecting an illegal from Mexico who uses a false name and age is school security at risk?

May 26th, 2010 4 comments

The public has a right to know if Ivan Mateo-Lozenzo, 21, attended West High School or any other Madison schools and for how long.

School district officials are stubbornly refusing to say.

Nor will they disclose if the district followed its own policies for screening new students when (or if) Mateo-Lozenzo enrolled at West using a fake name and age.

Police say Mateo-Lozenzo pulled the trigger in the shooting death of gang rival Antonio Perez, 19, on Madison’s East Side late last month.

Mateo-Lozenzo was an illegal immigrant from Mexico. But that’s not the central issue here because the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that school districts can’t withhold public education because of immigration status.

The real issue here is school safety.

Middleton school officials have acknowledged that Mateo-Lozenzo, 21, attended Middleton High School as Arain Gutierrez, 19 – a name and age that police say are fake. Middleton records also suggest Mateo-Lozenzo previously attended West High School in Madison.

A young man who gains regular access to our schools, who isn’t a teenager, who uses a false name and age, who is now accused of shooting and killing a rival gang member – that’s someone who presents school security concerns of high public interest.

Madison schools shouldn’t give out information willy-nilly about students, whose privacy should be respected.

But in extreme cases – and they don’t get much more extreme than this one – district policies should be flexible enough to incorporate some common sense.

Parents, students and taxpayers have a right to know what’s going on. The public needs more information and reassurance from Madison school officials about the case of Mateo-Lozenzo.

Refusing to give details about how this man came to attend local schools doesn’t give the public much confidence in district policies or in the protection of other students.

The Madison district’s refusal to even acknowledge if a man accused in a deadly shooting was a student is especially egregious.

School officials should stop hiding the facts and discuss the district’s actions in an open way. They also should let the public in on any discussion about district enrollment policy moving forward.

Pulling a trigger in the shooting death of gang rival is grounds for deportation. ICE him (Immigration & Customs Enforcement)!

Is Fox News too Liberal for Y/A Politics Conservatives?

May 16th, 2010 5 comments

I keep hearing from them about "Obama’s slow reaction to the flooding in Tennessee. Enter Fox News:

http://whitehouse.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/05/06/tennessee-governor-very-pleased-with-response-to-flooding-by-obama-administration/

"I’ve never seen this kind of response," said Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen (D), "and we’ve had our share of tornadoes and so forth." The Volunteer State governor was speaking to reporters on a conference call arranged by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from Nashville, which has been hit hard by rains last weekend.

"FEMA and the White House could not have been more helpful in this thing," Bredesen said. Record amounts of rain fell Saturday and Sunday, more than 13 inches recorded in parts of Tennessee. Officials Thursday reported the state’s 20th death from the storm and subsequent flooding.

Governor Bredesen recognized his state’s emergency was "sandwiched between" the news coverage of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the attempted car bombing in New York’s Times Square, and while he wanted to call national attend to the "extraordinary event", he noted the Obama administration has been focused from the beginning. "FEMA was on the ground before the rain drops fell," said Bredesen, who noted he’d not only spoken to Mr. Obama, but Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano and Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett. "We’re very pleased with the response we’ve gotten from the administration."

The Tennessee governor says no one in his state feels "slighted" by the fact the president has not yet been down to assess the damage first hand. "He has a lot on his plate, and we’re working through these things with FEMA and the Red Cross," said Bredesen. "But he’s welcome to come any time he wants," as is Secretary Napolitano, to whom Bredesen has also extended an invitation, and she’s accepted – the secretary will head to Tennessee Saturday to visit Nashville and the surrounding areas. Napolitano will meet with Governor Bredesen and FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, who is currently in state, on his second trip to Tennessee since last weekend’s storm.

So, what’s the deal, Conservatives? Has Fox News developed a Liberal bias? Is that why they are reporting that the Governor of Tennessee was amazed by the speed at which the Federal Government reacted?

Or, is it possible that you are just making stuff up to suit your preconceived notions about the Obama Administration?

Don’t mind me, I’m just going to sit back and enjoy watching all the YA cons get offended by the truth.

Obama more concern about illegals rights refuses to send any help to AZ border where rancher was murdered?

April 7th, 2010 9 comments

Gov Brewer on Fox News talking Immigration New theories in rancher’s deathby Alex Stone/ABC News (March 30th, 2010 @ 2:34pm) Policy >> Comments:9 PHOENIX – There are new theories about the murder of a southern Arizona rancher who was found shot to death on his ATV. His dog was critically wounded by gunfire.

At this point police believe it was an illegal immigrant who killed Robert Krentz.

Dogs have tracked the shooter into Mexico, but then the trail goes cold.

Police are now working on theories that include the shooter may have been a drug cartel scout or a band of thieves terrorizing Arizona ranches.

Police admit if the shooter lives in Mexico, identify the trigger-person is almost impossible.

Governor Jan Brewer and Open-borders Sen. Johnny Come Lately McCain, in the political battle of his life, is now calling for the National Guard. Don’t read his lips. Read his border security-undermining, law enforcement-abandoning record. Senator John McCain are among a growing number of state leaders calling for more border security
see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9za4Z6hZw6g
Thank you for calling attention to the murder of the Arizona rancher. This is not an isolated problem. Families who have farmed and ranched on the US/Mexico border for over a hundred years. For many years, we farmed along side those on the other side of the border. Most people who crossed our properties were not a threat, but that has long since changed. We now find ourselves faced with a government that feels the issue is not significant, as well as our neighbors in the city who are more concerned about “immigrants rights” than our safety. While Bush’s fence project had a lot of problems, the section that crosses our property created a significant deterrent. Traffic decreased from over a hundred per day to a handful per week. The cartels don’t care how they get access to your property. If they can’t buy you out, they will kill you and your family.

Welcome to Africa, same way the White Ranchers there lost their income. lifes, homes.Constant harassment, called racists.Just going to get worse, while our Politicians wring their hands when you talk to them and fill their coffers when your back is turned.Common Napolitano, OPEN your eyes!! Now that you are living in one of the most protected areas of the country did you forget how dangerous it is out here, where you policies are failing the people of this country?!!

Locating an elusive military record – researchers only please?

March 28th, 2010 1 comment

James McKenna, Black Range Tales, an attack on woodcutters by Apaches in the Mimbres Valley, New Mexico. McKenna, gives the date as ‘the fall of 1872. All ten wood cutters were killed, along with two troopers from Ft. Cummings, and someone named Young, who might, or mightn’t have been military. McKenna describes him as ‘a farrier’.

Eight microfilm of the records from the US Archives have provided hints that McKenna’s dates might be wrong. That the attack might have been 1869, when a mail-carrier named Young was killed [farrier – carrier similarity might explain it]. Or it might be later, during the Victorio wars.

Muster rolls have been pesky, and thus far no reports of the deaths have emerged, though they ought to be in correspondence from Cummings.

A McGurk, Company C, 4th Regiment, under Captain Tucker, Fort Cummings, was one McKenna source.

1st microfilm order assumed Cummings rpts went to Craig. But most seems to be Leavenworth.

Any thoughts where to go next?
Thus far haven’t located McGurk, nor his unit, nor Captain Tucker. But there are a lot of gaps in the Cummings correspondence and reports. I need to find where else they might be located in the archives.

I’d like to do this by buying and searching microfilm, as opposed to hiring a private researcher in Washington.

A "farrier" is someone who shoe’s horses as opposed to a blacksmith. Farriers just make shoes and fit them, blacksmiths do all manner of metal work. He may have been military, or civilian, given the mixed nature of the party. There may well be a typo in later transcripts leading to the carrier/farrier problem. However, I feel a farrier would be infinitely more use to the party, given the chance the wood cutters would have needed him for their horses.

EPIDEMIC OF SWINE INFLUENZA CAN BE PREVENTED BY THE SELF-HEMOTERAPY?

March 24th, 2010 1 comment

Epidemic of swine influenza can be prevented by the self-hemotherapy

In times of crisis, and in particular that we are living now, all possible resources to mitigate the effects of the crisis must be sought and evaluated.

Since 2004, the Brazilians are aware of the therapeutic procedure in the very old and traditional medical and veterinary, known as self-hemotherapy from a video circulated on the Internet through You Tube, containing an interview with Dr. Luiz Moura, resident doctor in Rio de Janeiro.

Subsequently the procedure was banned by ANVISA in 2007, which fortunately did not prevent many people who continue using the procedure in the treatment and prevention of many diseases such as acne, arthritis, asthma, amidalite, gout, influenza and even several diseases auto-immune. After the ban, the patients who were using the self-hemotherapy were mobilized in their defense and have signed a petition addressed to the President of the Republic, requesting the release of the practice claiming that it is a therapeutic procedure with no known risk to the patient and extremely effective in the prevention of diseases in general, since it is a nonspecific vaccine, capable of strengthening the immune system against various diseases, including influenza, caused by different types of viruses.

As the world lives in a climate of panic because the risk of swine flu appeared in Mexico in abril/2009, becoming a global pandemic like the Spanish flu of 1918, which some estimates reached 50 million deaths, or the Asian flu 1968, our duty to re consider the question of the use of self-hemotherapy in Brazil. The Spanish flu came to Brazil in October 1918 and remained for several weeks, until the end of November, but it was enough to kill at least 35 thousand people, mostly in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. According to scholars and medical specialists worldwide, a new influenza pandemic occurs more or less every 40 years and was last recorded in 1968, influenza in Hong Kong or Asia, where it is estimated that killed some 4 million people in the world. So 1918 + 50 = 1968 + 40 = 2008. Influenza was late, but arrived. Not by chance the World Health Organization (WHO) with the assistance of experts from around the world is pointing since the end of the 90s about the threat of an influenza pandemic in this new century. It is believed that, despite the current resources in the medical field and in the best condition of health of the global population, the ease of transport and the huge mass of people to move to each corner of the world each day will be able to spread the virus to all continents in only 4 days.

Taking into account that the application of preventive injection of the patient’s own blood, taken from the vein and apply the muscle has the property of strengthening the reticule-endothelial system (immune system) as it stimulates the body to increase the number of macrophages in the blood from 5% to 22% in 8 hours after application, maintaining that level for 5 days, is extremely useful, given the epidemic of swine flu, the application of the vaccine, not only for Brazilians who will travel to Mexico, but also to Mexicans have not yet hit by flu, which already has the mortality rate of 6%, demonstrating that this is really an epidemic of great gravity.

If the epidemic spread to other countries, which seems inevitable as the daily traffic of persons from Mexico and the disease continues to have an incubation period of 3 to 7 days, just a passenger contaminated by viruses, into a country to create conditions for transmission of the virus to others and so on. Is provided only as a vaccine specific for this strain of influenza in swine in about 6 months, by then the epidemic will have produced a disaster of major proportions.

Moreover we know that the influenza virus, the cause of influenza, because of their constant mutability, requires the production of new medicines. Even the vaccine, an important innovation emerged in the mid 90s, could have reduced efficacy in terms of the characteristic of the disease to submit to each winter with a new look.

As this is an emergency, we believe the prudent application of the injection of blood from the patient’s own vein (5 ml.), With an interval of 5 days to maintain the body with the index of macrophages in blood around 22% especially if the epidemic really is installed and remain for a long time.

Obviously we can not ignore also the food, which must be of good quality, including vegetables, legumes and fruits, especially citrus and those with large amounts of vitamin C, such as cherry, kiwi, cashew, etc.. Clearly, in the case of an epidemic, we must also avoid agglomerations, indoors, cinemas, theaters, etc., using surgical masks for protection, and goggles to protect eyes, can also absorb the virus.

And there are no contra-indications for the procedure of self-hemotherapy believe a humanitarian issue, before the current

Are there any double blinded, placebo controlled trials that show that this works?

Swine Flu is a joke!!!!?

March 22nd, 2010 6 comments

ive been reading articles and this entire thing is rediculous. people are making a huge deal of this "deadly" and "new" disease. Ive googled and looked at articles and people are saying this is so much worse than the bird flu people are already actually dying. I dont think thats the case. To me, Swine flu is a joke. 159 people have died in mexico? yeah sure but if this flu gives you a fever and its hot down there, with no money for doctors and live in packed areas with roads of dirt, then yeah, theyll probly die from the fever and the added heat since the body needs to be a certain temperature in order to survive. The media is playing a big role in this to make everyone perceive that its a big deal. What is it, one death in the united states? oh everyones worried now! it was a baby, and if you were smart, youd know they dont have the best immune systems. From the articles and blogs ive read, people are freaking out about it, and its rediculous because the only thing they know about is whats shown on the news. Heres a fact, around 6000 people alone in the U.S die from a "regular" flu. So whats the big deal with swine flu huh? there is none. The media makes it bigger than it is, people only care when its on the news. Same thing with shark attacks a few years ago. People were making a huge deal about there being so many shark attacks, well turns out it was the lowest recording of shark attacks in a year ever. So everyone stop thinking this is some serious and special influenza. its nothing special. You should still try to be sanitary, cuz no one likes a flu.
ok no vaccines no cure, theres no cure for a regular flu either, go ahead get a flu shot, doesnt mean you arent going to get it.

Yeah, nothing says "I am an idiot who does not have critical thinking skills" better than walking around in a surgical mask in fear of a flu virus.

ALL flu virus’s kill some people.
39000 each year in the U.S. alone.
This particular strain has shown far less severe effects than the standard annual flu strains that we deal with every year.

When you see the brain dead, indoctrinated buffoons worry about this it is not hard to see how we got saddled with our current president.
