2Pac ft.Dr. Dre – California Love

April 12th, 2011 No comments

“California Love” is a hip hop song by 2Pac featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman. The song was released as 2Pac’s comeback single upon his release from prison in 1995. A popular remix version of the song appeared on his 1996 double album All Eyez on Me. This is perhaps 2Pac’s best-known song and his most successful, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks (as a Double-A side single with “How Do U Want It”). The song was nominated for a posthumous Grammy Award as a Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group (with Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman) in 1997. The song was actually written and performed by Roger Troutman in the Original Version of California Love, Tupac and Dr. Dre made a modern day version of the song.

The original version of the track was not available on any of Shakur’s studio albums, but it can now be found on Shakur’s compilation of Greatest Hits.

The tune was adapted from Joe Cocker’s song “Woman to Woman”, and “California knows how to party” lines listing Los Angeles County neighborhoods are sung by Roger Troutman. The vocals “In the City of Compton” and the other cities and “California knows how to party” is adapted from Ronnie Hudson and the Street People’s “West Coast Poplock”. The remix features sample from the song “Intimate Connection” by Kleeer written by Norman Durham and Woody Cunningham.

“California Love” was Shakur’s only entry on Rolling Stone’s 2004 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, ranked #346 and #51 on VH1’s countdown of the 100 Greatest songs of the 90s.

Lethal Injection a Life Saver?

The satiric look at California’s search for lethal injection drugs for capital punishment on last month’s “The Colbert Report” was made possible by ACLU attorneys who used open government laws to gain access to documents revealing both the wasteful bureaucracy and ironic contradictions inherent in California’s death penalty, as I show in this video.

The clips of Stephen Colbert come from the December 15, 2010, segment of “The Colbert Report” titled “Tiny Triumphs – Lethal Drug Shortage” available online at http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/368731/december-15-2010/tiny-triumphs—lethal-drug-shortage

The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California provided the clips of Staff Attorney Michael Risher, Staff Attorney Linda Lye, and Death Penalty Policy Director Natasha Minsker especially for this video.

The ACLU of Northern California logo and “Cut This” webpage on the $1 billion cost of California’s death penalty is available online at http://aclunc.org/cutthis

Michael Jackson – Is It Scary [Death Row Remix] (Unreleased) (1997)

March 28th, 2011 12 comments

Now this is a true DEATH ROW BOMB right here! Who would it thought that “The King Of Pop” – Michael Jackson will ever team up with the notorious Death Row Records for some Pop/G-Funk crossover.. But IT’S REAL AND IT’S FUNKY! So read the full story below about the making of this dopeness and bump that in your system to the fullest!!!

In 1997 Tommy D Daugherty was hired by Michael Jackson’s team via Worlds End Management to produce a remix for ‘Is It Scary’. Sony gave him the acapella. The goal was for the remix to have the Death Row sound.
While Tommy D was working on the remix, 5 armed people burst into The Enterprise Studio in Burbank, CA. They tied him up along with the other 9 staff members and Carl ‘Butch’ Small, who was a percussionist at Death Row Records and then robbed all the synthesizers, drum machine and bass.
MJ’s team stayed quiet about this event because they didn’t want negative publicity. The next day Tommy D had a session planned with KoRn but didn’t have his equipment anymore. Snoop Dogg heard about the incident and gave Tommy D a $5000 check to help him. The remix was done on July 17, 1997 but was never released…
